Snape Victorious
I don't know where this came from really. I was just reading Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Chapter 8 (Snape Victorious), Page 153 & 154. It's the bit after Draco Malfoy immobilises Harry in the compartment after finding that he'd snuck in and was eavesdropping. Then Malfoy tramples on Harry's face and covers him with his own invisibility cloak so tat no one can see him. So on and so forth Harry ends up making his way up to the castle with our very favourite Potions master Severus Snape. I've gotten inside Snape's head here so… Here's my injection into the scene.
Severus Snape looked down at Harry Potter as he strode towards the castle, Potter breaking into a brisk power walk in order to keep up.
Harry looked up at Snape his green eyes burning with anger. Snape turned his head, hoping that the only thing Potter saw in his expression was pure loathing anger.
How is it, Severus Snape thought, that a boy so fowl deserves to inherit his mothers brilliant eyes? So beautifully green. Snape allowed himself another quick glance at the boy before he began telling him of the many points he had lost for his house for his tardiness and Muggle attire. He tried not to look at the Potter boy as they walked towards the castle, the feast already well underway inside.
Severus thought to himself, of Lily Evans, of how beautiful and fiery she was. Of her Patronus that his had moulded into the second he had learnt of her marriage to that Potter. He thought of her beautiful green eyes that this horrid boy had undeservingly inherited, and then, without meaning to, he let his mind wonder enough to speculate what this boy - bubbling with anger because of him - would look like if he had belonged to Lily and himself. Would his nose be more pointed, his features sharper? Would he be taller or paler skinned? Would he still have dark hair and his mother's loving green eyes? Or would the genetic traits lean more towards his, like they had towards the boy's father?
As they approached the doors to the entrance hall and came to an abrupt stop Severus allowed one last look at Harry. He realised then that he had allowed his mind to wonder too far. This vile boy may have inherited his mother's eyes, but he was in every way like his father – pompous and self-centred, selfish and loathsome – a troublemaker with no respect for anyone but those who are insecure and stupid enough to praise and befriend him. This boy would in no way resemble the son that Lily and he could have had.
He watched the boy twitch a little, as though he would like to steal away under his father's stupid cloak and enter the hall un-seen.
'No Cloak. You can walk in so that everyone sees you, which is what you wanted, I'm sure.' The boy stormed away, into the hall – seeming to want nothing more than to get away from Snape – and taking with him his eyes, the only things strong enough to bring a real image of Lily Evans to Snape's mind. It was just unfortunate that every look cast at him by the Potter boy showed hatred and loathing, forcing the image of Lily's face to twist with the expression she had the very first time he had called her a mudblood, which made every look the Potter boy cast him, tear at his heart.
Just wait, Snape thought on, until he finds out whom the new Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher is. And with the thought of Potter breaking down in tears in the middle of the Hall, Severus Snape's stride up to the teachers table was much more liberating than he thought ever possible.
