The word ΔΑΙΜΟΝΑΣ ("daimonas", or Δαιμών) is the word "demon". It is a Greek word and is pronounced "demonas". The Greeks of antiquity worshipped not only the gods of the heavens (mount Olympus), but also the chthonic gods of the underworld, as well as disembodied deifications of abstractions, what we today might call "spirits". "Right" and "Wrong", were no mere concepts but daimones, demons; sacred ideas, spirits, with divine power.
Back in the old ages, the world was controlled by gods and goddesses. One of these goddesses was the goddess of the Night, Nyx. Nyx, like almost all the other gods and goddesses, had many children and one of them was Apate. Apate was the personification of deceit. Some called her Fraus. Apate had different images. Her true form was a female upper body and a snake's tail for legs. Apate was one of the daimonas who escaped Pandora's box. Apate travelled the world for centuries, scattering her favorite thing in the world, deceit. Up until now, no one knows if she truly existed. Some say that she's returned to the Underworld, never to bother humans and mythological creatures alike. Others say that she's found her mate and has settled down. Still many say that Zeus and Nyx has decided to kill her because she was too destructive.
Through the years, stories about Apate and her deceitfulness slowly died down. Only some remember her now and how she looks like. But, the rumors are still whispered by the wind. Glimpses of her beauty and her power still show from time to time.
And perhaps maybe, just maybe, Apate is still among us, laughing at our foolishness, deceiving us. Maybe she's someone you know, someone you've talked with. Maybe she's that stranger on the bus, or that stranger you met on the street. Maybe she's your neighbor, your schoolmate, or maybe she's the one reading this story.
