She held him close, lips to his ear, humming a gentle tune,
A tender smile, a loving kiss; he would fall asleep soon.

Her own eyes were heavy; she'd been working all day,
But until he slept, with her son she would stay.
Stifling a yawn, and shifting his weight,
Thinking they'd be here forever at this rate:
She paced the room, her way lit by the stars,
Listening to his soft breathing and the passing cars.

His eyes falling shut let her know it wouldn't be long,
So she rocked him gently, and gave words to her song.
