It was the middle of the night and Keith had decided to go to the kitchen for some water. It wasn't something he did often, something always felt off about the castle at the times when everyone were either quiet or asleep. It seemed so peaceful but when everything that was happening in the universe was considered, the peaceful space seemed out of place. As he passed Shiro's door, he heard a scream followed closely by a muffled sob and that pulled him from his current train of thought.
He knocked lightly on the door so as not to wake anyone else. When he recieved no reply, he cautiously opened the door ready to duck out of the room if he was told to leave. Shiro was a very private person, after all and Keith respected that. It took a moment for his eyes to adjust to the dimly lit room and when they did, he spotted Shiro curled up on the bed, shaking like a leaf.
"Shiro?"
There still was no reply though it was obvious Shiro was awake. He wasn't quite sure what to do. He loved Shiro and to see him in such a position was worrying. He took a deep breath and went over to the bed, placing his hand on Shiro's shoulder in hopes of snapping him out of whatever dark place he'd been in. Shiro froze for a second before hesitantly reaching for Keith's hand. He didn't seek comfort often, at least not unless it was offered. Keith settled on the edge of the bed, taking Shiro's hand.
"You okay?" He asked gently after a long while.
"No."
"Want to talk about it?"
"No."
Keith sighed softly, shaking his head. He was at a loss as to what he was supposed to do. Shiro was his boyfriend, he was supposed to help in these situations. Shiro was still trembling lightly, clinging to Keith's hand. He normally didn't behave like this. Keith used his free hand to brush some hair from Shiro's face despite himself.
"What can I do to help?"
"Stay. I can't sleep alone."
Shiro's tone was quieter, weaker than he would've liked to seem had he not been too exhausted to give a damn. Keith pressed a kiss to Shiro's forehead, not taking the time to catch himself. Shiro simply pulled Keith to lay down next to him. Keith chuckled softly, wrapping an arm around the other man. Shiro hesitated before snuggling against Keith's side, closing his eyes for a moment only to open them again.
"You missed," he murmured before kissing Keith.
Keith froze for a second in shock before returning the kiss, instinctively pulling Shiro closer. They only broke the kiss once both of them needed to breathe. Shiro laid his head on Keith's chest, his hand immediately curling into the other's shirt. Keith kept his arms wrapped around Shiro, one hand playing with the hair at the nape of his neck. Shiro seemed to relax almost immediately. At some point during the night, the two had fallen asleep again, both quite comfortable with their position.
