"Hey, um, I was just calling- actually…I, I don't know why I was calling.
I just thought maybe, maybe you'd be up.
Anyway, I'll… I'll see you at the office."
Within the past several hours, Nathan remained unmoved in the dark of the night, now molded perhaps permanently to his couch and sinking deeper into the pillow-like softness of the cushions. Not that he could feel the comfort anyway. Physically or emotionally. Even with the Troubles gone.
With a beer in one hand and his cell phone in the other, he closed his eyes as her voice faded from the speaker once again. He forgot that he had left this particular message on his voicemail, but in a torturous kind of gladness, he relished that he had. No need to heighten his anguish by playing his Patsy Cline album over and over when he could hear Audrey's voice.
Over and over.
He pressed play again, losing count of how many times he had already done so but not caring one bit.
"Hey, um, I was just calling- actually…I, I don't know why I was calling.
I just thought maybe, maybe you'd be up.
Anyway, I'll… I'll see you at the office."
He took a swig of beer only to find the bottle now empty. Still not moving an inch from where he sat, he slowly stretched out his arm and set the glass bottle down on the side table next to him with a clunking sound that penetrated the quietness.
It was too quiet.
His thumb automatically hit play without even thinking about it.
"Hey, um, I was just calling- actually…I, I don't know why I was calling.
I just thought maybe, maybe you'd be up.
Anyway, I'll… I'll see you at the office."
The inconsolable grief he felt deep in his gut was sure to be his new Trouble, always there and never letting up. She may not be dead, but 27 years was a long time to be without her. And it had only been a day since that barn disappeared, taking her with it. And if this is how he felt after just one day without her…
Maybe pressing play one more time would help. Help him drown deeper into the abyss.
"Hey, um, I was just calling- actually…I, I don't know why I was calling.
I just thought maybe, maybe you'd be up.
Anyway, I'll… I'll see you at the office."
This time he didn't want to come up for air.
