"Hey Mom?" called Martha Kyle-Wayne to her mother as she got dressed for work.
"Yes, kitten?" she called back as she pulled the zip on her skintight bodysuit.
Her 12-year-old daughter came through the door holding the black velvet ring box that Selina was sure that she had hidden on the top shelf of the 20-foot bookcase in the lounge. Ah well, she was definitely her mothers daughter.
"Tell me the story of daddy proposing. It's the only one you've never told me."
Well, she did have a little time before Bruce would start his rounds. So she sat her daughter down next to her and began the story of her favorite heist so far.
"It was a clear night, and I had just broken into the Gotham Jewelry Store on Main. I was there for a very specific gem that had been flown in from Germany that morning. It was the engagement ring of Princess Louise of Prussia, a beautiful beige cat's eye gem, with diamonds surrounding it and a gold setting." Selina looked at the ring that was placed on her own finger and smiled at the memories. "But when I got to the display I was surprised to find that it had been replaced with another object from the collection. There was a notice saying that it had already been sold that morning.
"Before I could put the pieces together, your father, in all his caped glory, appeared. As he and I were fighting, I felt him slip something into my hand, just before I made my traditional escape. When I went to open it I found that ring box right there, in your hand," Martha held up the ring box in question, "with a note that said 'How about it?' And when I looked up, there was your dad, standing in the door. He walked over, took the box, and started fumbling.
"'I've never been much for these kinds of things, but…' he got down on one knee, opened the box, and said the four words I had never thought I'd hear from him 'I love you Selina, so… how bout it? Marry me?' Inside the box was the gem. He had bought me the ring I was about to steal." She laughed. Bruce always did know me better than anyone. "He started going on about how much he loved me, and how perfect we would be, and I just stared at him until I just dragged him up and kissed him hard."
As Selina pulled up her cowl, she gave her daughter's hair a ruffle. "Go to bed, kitten. Mommy has work to do." And with that, she set off into the night, to see her beloved husband.
