Sam had returned to visit Jessica's grave at least she had one. Losing Bobby had been bad but Dean.
Dean had deserved a 'hunter's pyre' at least but there hadn't even been a body left to burn.
Sam had come back here to reexamine his life and the time he'd temporarily left hunting that and to say good-bye to his darling Jessica.
"well and truly on your own" the words rang in his head.
He'd given the 'family business' his best, sought revenge, lost everything, everyone, and survived Hell, literally.
He was done regretting the past.
Time to move on.

A/N the last thing Sam heard in the finale was "Looks like you are well and truly on your own" as Crowley snapped his fingers and vanished leaving Sam standing in the middle of the wrecked lab.
I went with the idea that he can't get that final statement out of his head. Sam knows that Dean is gone and Dean and Cas vanished together. He knows Dean isn't in Hell or on Earth because Crowley said he couldn't help and that he is alone, realistically he would assume to Heaven because other than Hell nothing else would occur as a possibility to him even if we know it isn't true.
