The Kittypet Tribe Warrior

[PROLOGUE]

The raging waterfall blocked out any noise as the black cat slipped silently inside the cave behind it. Ignoring the squeals of kits and the hushing voices of their mothers, he quickly walked across the cave floor towards the back, where the entrance of a new cave stood, giant stalactites hanging from the top like fangs ready to crunch whoever dared enter. The black cat made his way inside, his eyes adjusting to the darkness of the cave.

In various places, there were small dips in the floor, in one of which a cat was sleeping soundly. Or at least, that is what it seemed.

"Stoneteller?"

"Yes, Screech?"

The black cat, known as Screech, or Screech of Angry Owl, jumped slightly as he realised his leader was awake. Recovering, he stepped forward.

"Do you think…I-i mean…maybe it's time for a telling?"

"…"

Screech winced at the silence, until Stoneteller spoke again.

"You know, maybe you're right," Shocked at this, Screech remained silent. "There was never a proper reason for a telling, so I guess I just forgot about it. It's a good idea though, just to make sure there's nothing bad to come to the Tribe."

He stood up, drawing a tongue over his ash-grey paw. As the tribe healer, he was confined to his den and not allowed out, but was rather well-groomed and healthy for someone who never went outside.

"But…I don't see the reason to call the whole tribe in, as it's not really an emergency. Let's just perform a quick one here, shall we?"

Screech twitched his tail a little as the leader headed even deeper into the cave. It was tradition that the whole Tribe should attend a telling, but he decided that the leader knew best and followed him into the back of the cave which was a place called the Cave of Pointed Stones.

When he arrived, Stoneteller was sitting in front of a small pool underneath a hole in the roof of the cave, which let the moonlight shine in and cast a spooky glow and the reflection of the moon in the water.

Stoneteller flicked his ears and leaned closer to the water.

"Moonrise is here, caught in rock and in water as it always has been and always will be…" Stoneteller muttered. There was a short silence.

"Screech, come here. There's an image…"

The black tom padded up to the water's edge where, indeed, a blurry orange image was shown coming into view.

"…what is it?" He whispered, not wanting to break his concentration.

"It's…it's…it's a cat!" Stoneteller exclaimed.

As if responding, the image slowly became clearer and formed into the shape of a furry ginger cat.

"Pureblood will soon be important, but the un-expectant must become expectant."

"What does that mean?"

"I'm not sure, it was the message The Tribe of Endless Hunting has chosen to share with me."

"Should we tell the rest of the tribe?"

"No, not yet. I do not feel this is important, it will remain between us for now."
