Daine looked across the table. Numair was talking animatedly with Alanna of Pirates Swoop. They were discussing the pros and cons to a spell they had recently been working on. She wished she could have discussed such things with him but, she didn't have the gift. She had wild magic.
Sometimes she wished she wasn't so different, but then she would always remember that if it hadn't been for her magic she never would have met all the wonderful people she now called her friends.
But to her, Numair was different. She wanted to tell him how she felt, but there were many setbacks. He was her teacher, her confidant. Besides, she thought, she was afraid of the rejection.
Starring at her food she realized, there were many reasons he could tell her no. The main being the 15 year age difference. She had never wanted feelings for him but they had come anyway.
Sighing, she turned her attention to Jon and Thayet, who resided up at the dais. Daine, deciding she was full, gave her tray to the kitchen people, and left. Heading to her little room under the trainee barracks, she began studying the book Numair had given her only a couple years ago. A knock at her cracked open door startled the girl out of her reading trance.
"Magelet, are you okay?" Numair asked, walking in. "You left dinner early."
Daine's eyes widened. "I thought you wouldn't notice" she said not looking him in the eyes.
The black robe mage came to sit next to Daine on her bed. "I always notice" he said starring at her. She turned her head to look at him.
"I don't know how to pronounce this bone" she said changing the subject and pointed to a picture of wild cat. Numair sighed internally. His teaching came out. That question led them into an hour lesson on the cat species.
Yawning, Daine closed the book and put it on her small nightstand. Numair also stood up but didn't say 'goodnight' then leave like usual.
"Numair…" Daine went to question but was cut off.
Numair had to bend down but did it willingly. His lips met hers gently before pulling back. "I always notice when you leave Magelet" he said quietly, kissing her on the forehead before leaving Daine to herself.
