The pain is as sharp as the happiness was elevating before.
She picks him up from the court – the hell how he got the money for the bail, the hell how he talked the jury into clearing him from all charges. All she cares for right now is that he is there. He is free, he seems more relaxed than she saw him after the shootout in the mall, and he greets her with his usual, cheery smile. There is darkness in his eyes she prefers to ignore. How stupid, idiotic, incredibly foolish – that she had, for a split second, believed he would be free now. Or that she had seriously hurt her shoulder when she craned her neck to look at him. The latter, she convinces herself, is the actual reason her eyes are stinging. Did he, even for a split second, consider how she–
"Watch the street, Lisbon," Jane tells her and she clenches her teeth and refuses to look at him for the rest of the drive.
