Haunting Sounds

The grass grows, the sun shines, the birds sing, and I breathe - but life is over.

My life is over.

As I watched him slip away from me, I knew it was inevitable. He was out of my grasp. My eyes were wide open in shock, fear. I could do nothing. The sound of the gunshot echoed in my ear, taunting me. It whispered about the life I couldn't save. The sun was shining, but it had suddenly gotten darker. I watched him fall,

Down.

Down.

Down.

The birds chirped a merry tune. Everyone, but me, was blissfully ignorant to the scene playing before my eyes. I choked out desperate screams, but no one heard me. I was completely paralyzed, but on one unfroze me . I breathed, wishing it was my last breath, but knowing it wouldn't be. I was aware that everything going on was truly happening. It was icy clear. I knew that I would never forget any detail of what had happened, as it replayed over and over in my head.

Nightmare.

Nightmare.

Nightmare.

I lost all hope thinking about it. This was too real.

Suddenly, everything intensified. The sun became too bright, the birds were too loud. Their chirps did not fit the mood. The quilt of grief covered me. It was the quilt where pain was laced into memories. An intricate pattern of horrors went on, and the grief of a dead person set into the blanket that was thick with misery.

And I didn't do what any sane person would have done. I just stood there, letting the event seep into my memory. I waited for it to be over, as sobs clawed at my throat.

I watched Dan fall before my eyes. His were no longer a bright and vivid jade, just dull. A limp body, so different from the boy I knew feigning energy. The image of death was permanently burned into my mind.

I had nothing to live for.
