Summary: A fable with my own Harry Potter twist in it. One-shot.
Authors Note: Hello there! So, this is just a really short story that was originally written as an application for Project Ink, a writing contest in a really cool HP site, Hogwarts Extreme. Basically, we were required to write a fable within a week which would be featuring magical creatures from any universe and had a 500 word limit. From said applications they will determine if you make it to the actual competition, seeing as they will only choose 20 contestants based on their performance. The results will come out in Aug. 11 so I can't tell you if I made it or not yet. Just thought I'd post it here and share it with you guys regardless, so enjoy!
The Dragon, the Goblin and the Elfling's dream
A dragon. Always travelling, exploring, fighting. And a goblin, always seeking, searching, pillaging.
Those two had decided to challenge each other, seeing as both believed they were the winning side of a grave argument. The dragon insisted on claiming that flying and enjoying freedom was the greatest virtue, while the goblin kept on showcasing the wealth he had acquired over the years.
And that led to a dragon currently stuck in the opening of a tunnel deep inside a mountain, cursing his luck and, unsurpisingly, the goblin.
"See? Caves are awful, awful places that have no light whatsoever and are restricting to your movements as well. How could you ever find pleasure in that?"
"Ah, but y'see, all that and more is worth goin' through if it means you'll get to priceless findings and ores. Forgotten treasures that'll make you want te never leave for the surface ever again." responded the goblin while gesturing to a shack filled to the brim with emeralds and rubies.
"But all the treasure in the world could never measure to freedom, for that I'm sure. Besides, what use is there in precious materials that you're going to store in chests, never to use but to admire and brag about?" said confusedly the dragon.
"Still on the wrong, I see. The beauty that is gathered in this shack is eternal. Throwing it away or exchanging it for useless junk would be a crime against the generosity of mother earth. On the other hand, independence 'n' freedom isn't granted for everyone, and will only last so much." sneered the goblin. The dragon simply shook his head and decided to make a different approach, and so he unstuck himself and led the goblin outside. Once there, he once again turned to his companion.
"C'mon, I tried getting to the cave so it's only fair you try flying here in the open. You'll see it's much more easier and fullfilling than mining and collecting stones that happen to hace different colors than most."
Said companion gave him a perplexed look. Surely he knew that not everyone could fly?
The young dragon seemed to finally realise that as well and reluctantly admitted that flying would be impossible for the small creature in front of him. "However," he continued, "one day I'll make sure that every single being in this world will be able to fly with me. And then you'll realise how wrong you were. Afterall, fitting inside a mountain is impossible for some, and goblins are known as followers ;not leaders. Why would you want to answer to anyone else but yourself?"
Thus they came to an agreement. If the dragon managed to teach everyone how to fly, then the goblin would share his wealth with the world.
Ofcourse, none of them kept their promise, but the small house elf who had heard their conversation couldn't know it, and so kept hoping that the world would someday change.
Reviews make my day! :)
