"Why is she even here?"
Jessica could hear the familiar voice of Hermoine Grainger coming through the cottage's old wooden door. She knew why those sentiments were directed towards her. Ever since she arrived to work at Hogwarts no one had understood why she was there. However, the Order knew why she was there. They were the ones who had sent her here. While Harry was obviously Undesirable No. 1, none of these students understood that she was arguably the second most sought after person in all of England right now. Voldemort was looking for her and if he found her, she would surely die.
There was a knock on the door. She rolled over in the bed and uttered her invitation. Fluer walked in with a smile and a tray of food. She hadn't realized how hungry she was until she smelled the sausage.
Jessica sat up in the bed and came into contact with her reflection for the first time in days. Her blonde hair was a giant knot where it usually fell in soft curls and her normally made up face was a smear of black eye liner and mauve lipstick. For a second she just sat there, squinting at the mirror trying to figure out who that sad disheveled girl was because it couldn't be her. Jessica Porter was constantly cheerful, always put together, and in control. This girl in the mirror was none of those things.
Fluer placed the tray on the end table and stepped out of the room. As she did, Arthur and Bill Weasley made their way into the tiny room. Jessica saw Harry, Ron, and Hermoine standing outside the door trying to sneak a peak at the unwanted visitor. Bill remained standing, but Arthur sat on the side of bed. He looked grave and it was clear why when he spoke.
"He's placed a hex on you," Arthur informed.
Jessica looked at him with confusion, "A hex. What kind of hex? I was his favorite person. I can't imagine him trying to hurt me intentionally."
"It isn't a harmful hex per se. He's tracking you. I would imagine that it has been on you your entire life and he just had very little reason to use it as he assumed you were loyal to him."
"Okay," she breathed out a breath she hadn't realized she was holding. "What do we do next?"
"Bill and I are going to remove it. I must warn you Jessica, it will be painful and tedious."
At this moment she felt like the fearless Jessica Porter she had been for so many years. She sat up and looked Arthur square in the face, "Let's begin."
It took days. It was painful and horrifying. It brought up suppressed childhood memories and painful realizations. But by the end of the third day, the hex had been lifted. Jessica slept for the next four days.
When she woke she could feel a difference. She felt lighter than she had in years. That was until she remembered everything that had happened in the last few years.
The floor outside her door creaked and Jessica looked up. She saw the person stop in front of her door and crack it open to take a peak inside. Hermoine looked in and seemed happy to see that Jessica was awake.
"Can I come in?"
Jessica motioned with her approval and Hermoine stepped into the room. She pulled a chair up next to the bed and took a seat. She looked Jessica in the eyes and said, "Do you mind if I ask you a question?"
Jessica shook her head in consent and said, "Ask me anything you like."
Hermoine looked her in the eyes and asked, "How did you get here?"
Jessica took a deep breath and began to sort through all the details in her mind and as she began to speak she knew the world was hearing a story it had never known before.
