A new story for a new doctor.
Clara was asleep, River was god knows where and the Doctor was freshly regenerated and all alone. He walked around the TARDIS console acquainting himself with every new fixture. He kept catching glances of himself in the metal instruments. "It's time" he said to himself. He walked to the one place he knew there would be a mirror. His wife's room. He wasn't calling her vein but he knew she would never leave the room without checking her hair and makeup, also her outfit. He opened the door, the still air still smelled of River's perfume. He walked in, softly treading on the cream carpet. Past her double bed with blue sheets and her wardrobe that was bursting at the seams. He walked by her dressing table, which was laden with perfume bottles, tubs of cream, lip sticks and an array of makeup of every colour. He ignored the mirror she used to apply her potions and powders and walked straight to the full length mirror mounted on the wall. How many times had he seen her in front of it? Checking herself from every angle, making sure not a curl was out of place. He stood in front of it, taking in every grey hair and piece of new clothing. He looked at every line on his face, the rough skin. Someone had been frowning all their life but it wasn't him. "Why am I so old?" he asked himself, his voice gruff "And so Scottish?" he smiled to himself remembering "Pond" he whispered to himself in his Scottish tone.
"Yes?" said a voice from the door. The Doctor turned on his heel "Sorry you're not the Pond I was thinking off. I wanted Amy not Melody"
"Oh well I'll just leave" River said gesturing towards the door.
"No don't" the Doctor said.
"Fine" River said crossing her arms "Why are you in my room anyway?"
"I wanted to see myself" the Doctor told her.
"Well let me tell you" River said walking towards him slowly "Grey hair, tall, nice new suit and a scots accent"
"I hate grey hair" the Doctor remarked.
"Oh I'll do a little dance soon" River smiled.
"You would" the Doctor chuckled.
"You even have lines" River smiled.
"So do you…." the Doctor trailed off at the look on his wife's face.
"What?" River asked sternly.
"Oh no dear it was just a trick of the light" the Doctor saved himself.
"It better be" River told him.
"So what are you doing here anyway?" the Doctor asked.
"Oh I needed a comfortable place to sleep. You'd be surprised how often I'm here and you don't notice" River smiled "Clara asleep?"
"Yes. How do you know about Clara?" the Doctor asked in wonderment.
"You'd be surprised how much I do to make sure you don't travel alone" River informed him.
"It was you how gave her the number and placed the ad!" the Doctor exclaimed.
"Could be" River said mysteriously.
"You and your secrets" the Doctor remarked.
"Now if you don't mind I would like to sleep" River shook him off.
"If you don't mind I'll stay" the Doctor smiled. He leaned down and kissed his wife.
