Later when Jess was at the cemetery he sensed that Leslie's spirit was setting by his side. Just being with her was intoxicating. They seemed to have talked for hours, about things like the trip he took to town with Miss Edmunds, and the fun she had making the bells. Again Leslie told him to keep working on his art and that her spirit would be with him always.
At other times when Jess and May Belle were in the greenhouse, even May Belle would sense that Leslie's spirit was there. Jess would be talking to someone and having a wonderful time.
Other than being the fastest runner in school, he found that school was getting less and less enjoyable, and finally dropped out all together. He left home about this same time. He would work some, and panhandle some. He found that living on his own was no fun.
Jess loved his art and with Leslie's help he developed his painting talent. She kept telling him to believe in what he saw, look through my eyes. Just don't run, don't hide, just try.
Jess, now, Joshua found himself in Carmel, Calif. He broke into one place looking for something to eat. He found himself in the world of high-end art, and a very nice art studio. The owner took Joshua in, as an art student. He was learning to be a very good art forger. At about the same time he met Amber, a private school girl. Leslie saw that Joshua was getting along very well with Amber.
(Leslie is speaking) "I could tell that I was losing you to her. When you first met I could see that you enjoyed her, just like you did me the first time you saw me, back at the old school. I could not let that happen, so I inhabited the very body and soul of Amber." Now what do you see, Leslie, Amber or both? You the reader be the judge.
Leslie so enjoyed being in Amber's body. She now was closer to Joshua than she ever thought possible.
