Spin the Bottle

It was the last day of summer and Jem and his friends were playing spin the bottle in the treehouse when Dill clambered in out of breath "Jem, Atticus wants to see you in the house it's about... " he stopped as Jem's friends started smiling suspiciously at him "go on Dill it's on you" said one of Jems friends. Looking at the middle of the circle he saw the bottle pointing straight at him "what I ain't playing!" exclaimed Dill looking, shocked

"Oh is that so, anyone in this treehouse is playing" replied a friend

"Please don't make me I'm no good at these sorts of things"

"Go on what's the worst that can happen it's only a small peck on the lips most of us have had to do it" said another one of Jems friends. Oddly enough Jem had not yet taken part in any of the convocation and had been very shy ever since Dill had entered the treehouse. "Fine I'll play this turn then I really must get back"

"Great" chorused Jems friend`s.

As one of them leaned forward to spin the bottle Dill realised that he didn't know any one's name apart from Jems. The bottle started to slow as Dill heart started pounding he had never kissed anyone like this before unless you counted family which Dill certainly did not his heart racing he stared at the bottle and its hypnotic rhythm he felt his eyes starting to water as he forced himself not to blink. The bottle came to a halt pointing straight at jem. A loud chorus of ooooooo's came out of Jems friend's mouths burning deep into Dills ears quickly followed by chants of "kiss, kiss, kiss, kiss, kiss"

"What no way no no no no" yelled Jem as his cheeks started to turn bright red. "Why not Jem you were game for everyone else kissing you can't back out now its your turn" replied one of Jems friends.

"Because he's a kid you should never of made him join in any way"

"Well you didn't stop us, you just don't want to kiss him that's all"

"Oh go on Jem we all did it and I don't hear Dill complaining, your just a chicken Jem" retaliated another one of Jems friends a new voice.

"Well um well I just don't wa" he was broken of by the sound of his friend making chicken noises, "Go on Jem be a good sport, or your chicken for life"

At that point Jem gave in to peer pressure, he could not afford to lose his friends and they were right it didn't mean anything, but why did it have to be Dill. Now blushing profusely Jem got up and went to Dill who had his head in his hands shaking all over his first real kiss was to be with Jem. He felt a hand on his shoulder slowly looking up he saw a rosy cheeked Jem who had little beads of sweat dripping down his forehead "It's okay Dill it's only a kiss" Jem murmured softly but Dill could tell that Jem did not think about it like that he could tell by his facial expression he was worried. Scared they both started to lean forward eyes closed in terror Dill tilted his head sideways hands clutching at the floor he felt tasted salt on his lips not sure if they're tears or sweat but suddenly he tasted something sweet and felt the warmth on his lips the pressure of Jems lips on his. A load of cheers broke out and Jem pulled back abruptly Dill gasped for breath, his first kiss and it had been with a boy but he had liked it.

"Jem, Dill what was that" shouted a voice from the treehouse entrance turning his head to the right he saw Scout standing there looking like she had seen a ghost, but it was much worse she had seen the whole kiss. "It was nothing Scout we are just playing a game" said Jem. Scout looking suspiciously between the two of them said "okay but Atticus said he wants you both to come in and have dinner as it's the last day of the summer holidays so the rest of you it's time to go home now"

"Okay, Jem we guess we'll see you in school tomorrow, bye ".

As all of Jems friends left there was an awkward silence between Dill, Jem and Scout as she eyed the two boys but she said nothing as they left for dinner.
