The idea is that somehow May has been taken down, and this is Skye finally beginning to come to terms with it.
Skye hugged her knees to her chest tightly, the balloon still gripped firmly in one fist. This had to be done. She had to say goodbye. There was never an easy way to say goodbye to someone that you loved, but this was especially hard for Skye. Growing up she had never had someone to care for her as much as Agent May had. Now she was gone. Just as she had allowed herself to get used to trusting someone she had been ripped from her so cruelly. Everyone else was starting to move on from the loss and Skye now felt like she was ready to move on too. She knew this didn't mean that the pain and anger would suddenly stop, but it was a first step in the right direction. It was Simmons who had suggested releasing a balloon to Skye. She had rambled about it being symbolic, but Skye wasn't really paying attention. She just thought it sounded nice, peaceful, even.
"You were always good to me." Skye said quietly, wondering if May was somewhere that she could hear her. "It sucks that you're not here now. It really sucks. But I can't keep hoping there'll be a miracle and you'll come back. I need to let you go now." Skye turned her head to the side and squeezed her eyes tightly shut to try and stop herself from crying. There might be nobody around but she still didn't want to cry. She wiped her eyes on her sleeve and then, very slowly, let go of the balloon string. The second Skye let it go, she felt a weight being lifted from her shoulders.
It slowly began to float up, the wind carrying it into the clouds. Skye leaned forward as it went, as though her pain was still creating an extra string, still tying her to the balloon. But she forced herself back. She could do this now, she knew it. She could let go. The grieving process was far from over. It would be a long time before Skye could comfortably talk about May without the negative emotions bubbling up. For now, she would push her to the back of her head, for it was the easiest way. Only time had the power to heal the wounds May's departure had formed on Skye's heart, but she had hope that they would heal eventually now that she had finally had the courage to admit it was goodbye.
