Why She Smiles

He was the reason why she smiled.

Don't get me wrong, Annie Walker's lips were often turned upwards on his face a lot, but she didn't really smile outside of Danielle's house. No, her smile was special for her nieces. But that all changed the day that August Anderson guided her down the hallways on her first day of the job.

She knew that she really wanted him as a friend when she found out about their shared love for the sound of Mingus. This was probably one of the best decisions that she has made in her life. Why? She's happier with him around. She likes talking to him as a way to stall doing all of the paperwork that seems to be piling up more and more every day. She like how he always pays rapt attention to her when she talks or just enters the room and his smile whenever she talks to him… no matter what it is she always helps her and gives her advice on what to do.

Annie really appreciates all that Auggie does for her, too. He took one of her niece's classes on a tour of the Smithsonian because she couldn't, has helped her babysit both Katia and Chloe for Danielle at times, and has been to many of her sister's Thursday Dinner death traps. Auggie would also wait for her to get finished with her mission and meet him in his Tech Ops office so that they could go to Allen's for drinks… as long as she drives.

This isn't a one-sided relationship, though. No, far from it. Whenever Auggie needed someone, Annie is always the first one to his apartment in record time. She would sit with him and do what he does for her; she'd listen to him as he tells her what the problem is. At times it was that he was having horrible flashbacks or nightmares from when he was in Special Ops, or it could just be that he felt alone.

Annie knew that at the end of the day he was and would always be there for her, and vise versa - not just because they both loves Mingus.
