In a cemetary before the smallest grave in the fathest corner, a man stood quietly with a bouquet of roses. His normally sky blue eyes were dark, stormy, and empty instead of being filled with the bright, sunny look they used to have. Hair the colour of the amber fields of wheat of his country blew gently in the soft wind.
As the man knelt to place the beautiful bundle of blood red flowers upon the forgotten grave, he remembered the way the boy buried beneath him had left the world. He'll never forget the tears streaming down his face from pain-filled amethyst eyes while he said, "I'll never let you go," the way his frail body shook in his grip. The boy's previously wavy, golden blond hair was now soiled with his own blood.
The words he'd spoken to him forever rung clear in his mind today. He knew it'd be impossible to forget his voice, for it would forever haunt his dreams.
"Don't leave me here alone."A few tears fell from the man standing before the grave's eyes from beneath his glasses. He never could have left him alone there, whether the other blond had asked him to stay or told him to leave.
While he had held the slowly draining body in his arms, he'd remembered one night long ago when they had been children. A war had been raging between their neighboring countries. The two children were hiding in a house, hoping they wouldn't get blown to bits by a stray bomb that was shot too short.
While the younger cried and attempted to look out the window to see if it was over, the elder had stopped him. He remembered the exact words he said, despite the fact that it had taken place many years prior.
"Don't you dare look out that window, brother. Everything's on fire. The war outside's still going on. I'll sing you a lullaby, and I want you to hold onto it, even after I've stopped singing."
The younger brother nodded slightly as the elder held him close and began to sing softly to him. Unconsciously, the man before the forgotten grave began to sing the song again to the dead boy as more tears fell uselessly into the grave soil.
"Just close your eyes, the sun is going down. You'll be alright, no one can hurt you now. Come morning light..."At this point, it didn't sound like a song anymore in the otherwise silent cemetary. The song sounded more like broken sobs from a lonely, defeated man. Without his brother, he had nothing left in this world. As he collapsed to his knees before the small grave, he finished the short song with a few soft words.
"...you and I'll be safe and sound."
