Author's Note: This is just something that came to me today while I was talking with my dad about soul mates. And I'm writing it as sort of a final hurrah for JJ and Emily. Although they will always live on in my head.
Disclaimer: I don't own Criminal Minds. I would sort of like to think I'd jump off a bridge with you, though.
So yay for sappy, suicidal characters. Onto the story.
Its cold out. Cold enough to need a jacket. But she isn't wearing one. She's standing on the bridge, overlooking the river. She's thinking about how beautiful it is here, and how this is the last thing she wants to see.
She brings her arms up and crosses them in front of her as she shivers. Not because of the breeze blowing off of the river, but because she knows that was a lie.
But what she wants to see, she knows she can't. That face, with all its eloquence, can't be seen from here. Because its owner will try to stop her, and she can't have that. She needs to do this.
She's going to do this.
Alone.
Suddenly she's shivering again. But this time, the shivers are caused by the eyes she can feel on her back. Those soulful brown eyes.
She steps up, onto the ledge.
"No, wait! Two minutes, JJ. You owe me that much." She hears, drifting over shoulder. The voice stops her, more so than the words. The voice that she would know anywhere. The perfectly articulated sentences that have haunted her, ever since they pronounced that name. Emily Prentiss.
She steps down, off of the ledge.
She doesn't turn as Emily approaches, but she leans back as she feels the brunette's arms slip around her from behind. It really is too cold to be out here without a jacket. But she knows that's just an excuse. She wants to get as much of Emily as she can, this one last time.
"What did I tell you, the day I asked you to marry me?" Emily murmurs softly into her ear.
She doesn't even have to think.
"Soul mates." She whispers, tears slipping down her cheek.
Emily's hand gently wipes her tears away, and she isn't even surprised that the brunette knew she was crying. She believes in their 'soul mate' status.
"And what is a soul mate, Jennifer?" Emily asks softly.
"Somebody who will stop you from jumping off of the bridge." JJ answers hoarsely.
She feels Emily shake her head before she turns in the older woman's arms, trying to find a way to explain why she has to do this. She finds herself staring into those soulful brown eyes as she hears the words that steal the very breath from her explanation.
"No, baby. A soul mate is someone who will hold your hand, and jump with you." Emily steps up onto the ledge, pulling JJ up with her.
They're going to do this.
Together.
"I love you." They speak simultaneously.
She leans up, and presses her lips to Emily's cheek. Emily turns her head, and their lips meet, tongues sliding together, before she pulls away.
She takes the offered hand, and they jump.
A/N: So, now that you've realized that I'm capable of more than just lusty angst, you should review.
