It starts with Bucky falling.

It starts out with you looking down into the abyss and wondering if he's still alive.

It starts out with you realizing that your greatest fears have come true since becoming 'Captain America'. That while you live on, everyone else dies. That in that chamber you were in, and the serum that Dr. Erskine injected you with changed you so fundamentally that while you became a source of strength, you became more and more lonely.

It starts out with you losing your best friend, your brother in arms. The one person that you trusted with your everlasting soul.

It doesn't end up like that though.

It ends up with you remembering every excruciating moment, every painful, wonderful moment of your life up until you met him.

It ends up with you remembering your mother, her hair, her smile and the way she would come home after long shifts in the hospital, tired and smelling of anticeptic.

It ends up with the stock market crashing, though you didn't know that at the time. All you knew is that Mom had to pick up more shifts at the hospital and that she barely came home. All you knew is that you had to start cooking and cleaning, and when you had one of those attacks, the ones that make you unable to breathe or speak, that she wouldn't be there. All you knew was that you weren't allowed to eat breakfast anymore and that you didn't get any new things, and that Mom was throwing around strange words like 'foreclosure' and 'lay-offs'. All you knew that she would smile wider and wider, while she ate less and less. All you knew is that after she caught an illness, the illness, she was home more than before, but she couldn't stop coughing. All you knew, was that even as she laid dying, trying in vain to breathe, she kept on mouthing 'I love you'.

It ends up with your mother dying and you on the streets, the house foreclosed.

It ends up with the first night that you were homeless, you get in a fight, getting kicked and bruised, and you don't stop getting up. That was the night you met Bucky.

You start out with the end of Bucky, but you end up with the start of your brotherhood with him.

And that hurts the most.
