South held North's hands, looking down into her icy blue eyes. Despite how cold she seemed, South knew that she was as warm as the equator on the inside. If she had been frozen on the inside then he knew that she would not be crying.

"Why do you have to go?" North sniffed.

"I'm melting and have to get somewhere safe. I can't hurt people, and I can't hurt you."

North looked at her lover defiantly. "No. I'm coming with you."

A sad smile graced South's lips. His heart was breaking with second spent with North. "My love, this cannot be so. You know you have a duty to stay here and conceal Santa's hiding place. Think of the elves." He grabbed her shoulder's for dramatic effect and whispered. "Think of the children."

A sob came from North, but she quickly recovered. "You're right. I have to stay. But...will you at least write?"

South nodded. "Yes, I will write. I will write every day."

He looked up at the rising sun. It was time to go. The longer he spent at the equator, the quicker he would die and by the look on North's face, she knew it too. Quickly she pushed him away, fearful for her love's life. "Go. Go quickly, and godspeed."

South nodded and turned to leave. But he couldn't leave without doing one thing first. He turned back to North, stole a deep and passionate kiss from her, and ran off back south. When he looked back, he saw North smiling with delight.
