The Shade

Chapter 1

It was a cold winter's night; Dumbledore had just placed the well-known Harry Potter with the only family he had left in the world. But what happened six months before that chilly night? Another child was placed at the doorstep of her aunt's house, along with her older brother, Terrance. Hagrid was eager to deliver this child to the house, but the very stubborn Severus Snape had actually opened his stone-cold heart for once and decided that this child would be watched over by himself. Dumbledore disregarded that plea, because Severus was needed at the school, and they already had a plan for where this child was to grow up. "Severus, I will allow you to deliver the child to the house, but nothing more. You are needed as a potions teacher at Hogwarts. It is not your role to play in this child's life. You can see her whenever you are not serving as a teacher, but no other times. And remember, she mustn't know anything till she is old enough and ready." Minerva McGonagall was standing beside Dumbledore, nodding in agreement.

"You don't know what you're doing! I can take care of her! You know it's easy to find a new potions teacher. You don't need me and you know it!"

Dumbledore's voice bellowed loudly at the professor, "You will not disobey me! You know that you are much more than just a teacher at Hogwarts. You know what is to happen to the girl, and I need you at Hogwarts to make sure she doesn't wander away from us."

Severus gave the old man a cold, hard stare, "Yes, Dumbledore."

Dumbledore looked at him and said one more thing, to both him and Minerva, "You both know who her parents were, and we mustn't speak of them to her till she is ready, understood?" He made sure to keep his voice just a whisper so that Terrance couldn't hear.

Minerva and Severus both nodded their heads at the same time. Terrance looked up at them, "Why do I have to leave mother, Dumbledore? What happened to her? Please tell me!"

A flash of pain crossed over McGonagall's face, and Dumbledore spoke, "Your mother won't be with you anymore, because she wants your aunt to take care of you and your sister."

Terrance looked up at them, tears in his eyes, "Dumbledore! Please! I don't know my aunt. But I do know you and Mr. Snape, and Ms. Minerva, and my mother. Please, take me and Avalon with you. I don't want to stay here. I want to stay with you guys. Please." He had a few tears rolling down his cheeks at this point.

Severus was the first one to speak this time, "No. You must stay here with the child. You aren't safe with us. Please, do this for her, because you love your sister, right?"

Terrance lowered his head, "Yes, sir."

Severus proceeded to take the children to the doorstep and knock on the door. Then, the professors disappeared. The child; that lay in her brother's arms, that was cradled up by her aunt, and had a history that most were too frightened to speak of; was someone. That child was me.
