What would go through the minds of the two boys who wanted so badly to be like L after he died.
I wondered about that. So I wrote this.
Mello and Near do not belong to me.
R.I.P. L 3
Love, Jeffrei Star
He's gone.
Those were the two words that struck Near like lightning. Any normal child would question, "Is he coming back? Where is he?" But Near knew he wasn't coming back. A mixture of emotions filled him. Betrayal was one of them. Anger. But he kept calm and continued to do his puzzle. He wondered how L would be so stupid as to give someone his name. He knew Kira was the one who killed L.
How would Mello take it? He was the one who let all his emotions take the better of him. He was weak like that. The only weakness Near ever saw honestly. Near calculated the scene in his mind. He knew his calculations would be correct.
Mello would wake up, and see the look in Near's eyes. He would ask, "What's wrong Near?" And Near would reply calmly, trying to hide the rage so not to further upset Mello, "He's gone. L..." Mello's bottom lip would tremble, and he would feel weak. And he hatred, no despised, feeling weak. His fists would clench and he would growl out the name, "Kira." He would try and deny L's death. But he would deeply know the truth.
Near stared at his puzzle. "You knew this would happen..." he said softly. "You told Kira your name...just to prove you were right. Didn't you?" Near spoke as if L was sitting in front of him, in the uncomfortable position.
Near looked up, he heard movement come from the bed room. A few moments ticked away. Near mentally prepared himself for the news that Mello was not ready for. He walked in, yawning. "Morning Near." He said with a smile. Near wanted to smile back. But he couldn't. So he forced one. It showed the sadness he didn't have.
Near's calculations were correct. Mello sat across from him, silently. He was thinking. Thinking, "Why would L tell anyone his name? He knew Kira would strike..." He bit his lip. He knew L wanted to prove himself right. Unlike Near, this did not cause Mello anger. Instead it made him sad. He didn't want to think about this anymore. Fingering the rosary around his neck, he got up, going to get a candy bar. Near watched him. Mello fed his chocolate addiction. It reminded them of L. For once Mello did not finish the chocolate bar. Near never thought he'd see the day. Ever.
For the next week things were different. The fact that L just wasn't there felt so wrong. Near, who was used to being held by Mello, found himself holding him more. But it was at the grave where Near felt a rare dominance in the relationship.
The grave. There had been a small funeral for L, but they didn't go. They went to the grave to have a private moment with L. "Did it mean that much to you?...To know who Kira was? We were helping you. We could have worked together." Mello said in a whispered tone. "We knew that this could have happened. We knew L was the kind of person who would do something like that." Near said. It was true. L had told them himself, that he would do everything necessary to find out who Kira was. Mello took his rosary all, rolling it around between his fingers. Near watched at he draped it over the tomb where L lay buried. It was simple. What he would have wanted. Near took Mello's hand, and he looked at him. "This only gives us more reason to find Kira." Near said. Mello hugged him. Near looked at him, then hugged back, tightly. He would never let go.
Never let go of his Mello.
