10 years later

Suddenly Emmett and Jasper were standing in front of me, shoulder to shoulder, blocking the boy from sight.

"She said no." I could hear the threat behind Emmett's words, and the boy obviously did too.

"Alright, alright. Just making sure." I heard him turn around and walk off.

"There was absolutely no need for that."

Emmett grinned down at me. " 'Course there was. He was bothering you. And what would Edward have said if he found out we had let some guy ask out his wife?"

"Well he wouldn't have found out from me."

"There's also the fact that your eyes are blacker than Carlisle's new Mercedes." Jasper's voice broke through our banter. "If that boy had taken one step closer we wouldn't be having this conversation. You should go home."

I turned and took a chemistry book out of my locker. "I'll be fine. There's only one more period to go. Speaking of which, I'm going to be late." I shut my locker door and moved towards the corridor door. Emmett stopped me by laying a hand on my shoulder.

"Jasper's right. You can't stay."

I knew it was irresponsible to risk staying but I hated admitting defeat. We'd been through this scenario more than once before. I sighed and changed my direction, towards the other end of the corridor and an exit to the car park.

I felt better out in the fresh air and walked over to Edward's car. Still a Volvo, still shiny, same stupid owner, but a slightly newer model. I knew Emmett and Jasper would be watching until the car was out of the car park. The first time I had been forced to go home early I had sneaked back in and almost attacked the first human I met. Luckily Alice saw what was about to happen and appeared by my side just in time to stop me meeting them.

In the ten years since I had been changed we had lived in Alaska for most of the time, and this was the second year of attending high school. The school was in south west Canada, a few miles from the border with Alaska.

While I thought back to those first few years I arrived home. The house was not dissimilar to the one back in Forks, large rooms, all white inside. Carlisle would still be at the hospital but Esme was sitting in the living room, she was reading a book from her husband's study when I entered.

She looked up and smiled at me.

"Hello Bella. How was school?" Esme was truly my mother now, she asked questions just like Renee used to when I arrived home, and I loved her just like I loved Renee.

"Okay." I smiled back to apologise for my short reply, then ran up the stairs to the room that Edward and I shared, grateful that I could run upstairs with out the danger of tripping anymore.

Just as I sat down on the couch, after dumping my bag in the corner, there was a knock on the door. I got back up and opened the door for Esme.

"Do you want to talk?"

No one else would be home for about an hour, I sat back down on the couch and Esme sat beside me.
