Pointless fluff. Woo.
Jane woke up to a small force pushing on her legs from the floor beside her bed. She stretched and turned her torso, squeezing her eyes shut in an attempt to clear the sleepy fog from her head, "Why aren't you in bed?"
She stretched out a strong arm, wrapping it around the child on the floor and pulling her onto the bed beside her. Here in the faint moonlight streaming in through the window, she could see the faint tear tracks streaming down the four-year-olds face. "What's wrong?"
Before the child could answer, a bright blue flash illuminated the room for a moment, followed by a loud crash of thunder. The girl whined softly and hid her face in her mother's neck. Jane pulled the girl closer and covered her with the blanket, kissing her head and whispering comforting words into her ear, "Hey, baby girl. Don't worry, the thunder isn't gonna get you. No, it can't hurt you. It's just scary and loud is all."
Maura woke up when the extra weight was added to the bed behind her, listening to her wife interact with their daughter for a few minutes before she made herself stretch and move to face the pair. Her daughter's dark hair matched her wife's almost exactly, and she reached out to put a hand on the girl's back. "Hey Kimmy. Did the storm scare you?"
The girl moved so she was lying on her back between her parents. She nodded, looking sleepily between the women and stifling a yawn, "Yeah. Ma made it less scary. Can I stay here tonight?"
Maura nodded, smiling down at her daughter and pulling her closer as Jane stood slowly, taking a moment to stretch before leaving the room. She returned a few minutes later holding a worn out stuffed bunny that had been purchased after a particularly tough case that left Kimberly mostly under the care of Angela Rizzoli for several days, sleepily named Flip after Jane had dropped him and claimed that he was just doing flips for her. Trailing behind her was Jo Friday, who happily jumped onto the bed and curled up at Maura's feet.
Jane got back into bed, handing Flip over to a smiling Kimberly. The four-year-old kissed both of her parents, mumbling a quiet goodnight to each of them. She said goodnight to Jo Friday at the end of the bed and shouted a goodnight to Bass, Maura's tortoise. Finally, she placed a small hand on Maura's large stomach, leaning down to kiss it. "Goodnight Mikey. I can't wait to meet you next week."
The girl got comfortable between her parents, hugging Flip close to her chest and closing her eyes, a sleepy smile coming across her face when both of her parents put a hand on her back as the thunder rumbled in the distance. Jane stretched up to place a kiss on her wife's head, whispering a simple "I love you" over their sleeping daughter and moving her hand to cover Maura's on her back.
