Bring him down
--
Legolas aimed and released the arrows in one swift motion; he did not even have to think about it. But although both of them hit their intended target, the runner did not stop. He jerked and screamed, but flung himself forward nevertheless.
Time seemed to slow down. Horrified, the elf watched the runner disappear out of his view, the torch sizzling.
For one eternal moment, nothing happened.
And then the wall exploded.
Legolas tensed as the incredible noise deafened his sensitive ears, but it was neither the sound nor the sight of the rocks being blown away that chilled him to the bone.
Desperately, he tried to see what had happened to the people who had been standing on the wall, tried to find his friends.
The battle did not seem to matter anymore, as dread filled the elf.
When he finally saw Gimli and Aragorn, his heart sank: both of them were lying facedown on the ground, umoving and oblivious to the approaching Uruk-Hai.
Legolas set off towards them at once, which did not prove very easy due to the chaos around him, but the next time he caught a glance of his friends, he saw that Gimli had started to move, and that Aragorn was just shaking his head as if to clear his mind and was about to struggle to his feet.
Relief washed over the elf so thoroughly that he was shaking all over.
They were alive.
