Summary: When the one lead he's been waiting for so many years finally shows up, it seems as if John isn't as ready to follow as he thought.
His note lay on top of the coffee machine, the bag was packed.
He looked at his sleeping son, the face beneath the crew cut soft and vulnerable, eyes rolling under dark lashes as if they were searching for his brother. Dean didn't talk about him, but Sam was like a missing limb – there and not there at the same time, ever-present, hurting like hell.
John swallowed, blinking.
He had raised and trained his boys as fighters because he'd known the day would come when he had to go in order to protect them.
So why'd leaving feel so wrong?
