Angels

I know I'm a dork, but I watch American Idol. (IS SHOT) When David Archuleta sang this song, I broke down in tears. (which is why I was so sad when he lost…not to mention he's so cute I just wanted to pinch his cheeks XD)

Been a while FMA fandom! I blame San for this—just talking to her makes me want to write EdWin XDD

Edward Elric stood with his hands burrowed deep in his pockets, his golden eyes turned directly up to the sky. It was a chilly autumn day in Berlin, the breeze as crisp as a snapping twig. Ed scowled and pulled his thick red scarf tightly around his neck, up to his ears and over his mouth. Sighing, he brought his right arm out of his pocket and held it up to the azure sky, flexing his fingers experimentally.

Now don't break it! I made it out of a lighter steel so it would be more flexible, but it's also a lot easier to break, so be careful, alright?

The voice echoing through his subconscious was enough to bring a smile to Edward's face. He chuckled to himself and tapped his fingertips together, listening to the dull clink of metal against metal. Edward's expression dropped and he looked off to the side.

Winry…

It had been three years, maybe four? The alchemist knew he had lost count. Each day just felt like it dragged here in Germany—although it would've been a hell of a lot worse if it weren't for his little brother. Still, there were certain things he knew he missed more each day he was gone. Pinako's stew. Arguing with the bastard colonel.

At the very top of that mental list was her name. Winry Rockbell, his only regret left in Amestris. The one thing he had never done was tell her he loved her.

"Edward! Where are you?"

The smile on his face grew slightly. He knew he might never get back home, to his real home but…

A pretty woman with long flaxen hair and crystal blue eyes ran up to him, waving a hand, "Hey, are you coming or not? We're gonna be late!"

Edward didn't believe in God. He didn't believe in creationism. But, he thought to himself with a bemused smile as he crossed over to the woman's side, maybe he could start believing in guardian angels.

Germany had blessed him with this woman, a near clone of his Winry back home. And although she wasn't the same—less violent, for sure—it was still like she was with him, guarding his heart until he got home safe.

Edward's small smile became a toothy grin, and he put his hands further in his pockets. "I'm coming, I'm coming!"

While he could never love the Winry-clone, she gave him the same love, the same protection. And she, just like the other Winry, would never forsake him.

And that meant the world to him.

--

Winry still sleeps with his pocket watch close to her chest, because she feels like she's protecting him--and that means the world to her.

I know that life won't break me,

When I come to call, she won't forsake me

I'm loving angels instead…
