The world was too bright.

Shadekit couldn't lie; the world was too bright. After opening her eyes just moments ago, she gazed around the nursery, squinting in the new light.

"Look, she's opened her eyes!" A voice called out. Hm, what? Shadekit thought. Who is that?"

"Barely," a sharper voice retorted. "If I didn't look closely enough, you wouldn't be able to tell."

"Now Boulderkit, stop that at once," another voice ordered. "She's just been born; she'll open her eyes when she's ready."

Now curious, Shadekit pried open her eyes a little nit more, and this time she could make out several different cats. One of them was pure black with deep brown eyes, and the other one was an orange tabby.

Closer to her, and more to her size was a brown tabby with blue eyes like the larger one. "Where am I?" Shadekit asked. "Who are you?"

The black one smiled. "Well I'm Moondust, sweetheart," she said gently with a voice like honey. "This is Daisyseed and Boulderkit," she continued, introducing the larger she-cat and the smaller tom in order.

"You're awfully small," the brown kit said scornfully. Suddenly, a feeling of exhaustion swept over Shadekit. "I'm tired..." she mumbled, her eyelids drooping, and before long she delved back into the wonderful world of sleep.
