Dean remembered closing his eyes, his fingers imprinted by the amulet in his hand. He felt someone by him, right behind him. He turned around to see Castiel, blue eyes reflective. Dean could see himself reflected in them, his fear. But he could also see his love.
"I told you not to come." Dean's voice was hoarse.
"I couldn't let you die alone." Cas whispered, holding Dean's hands in his own.
"We have to do this now." Dean said.
"NO!" A woman's voice yelled, but Dean couldn't hear her. Dean shut his hands, Castiel guiding him. They looked up at each other one last time. They didn't need to say anything. It was silent, like there was an understanding between them. Cas pulled forward and gently kissed Dean, who was slightly surprised, but then he was kissing Castiel back, because he knew that if he was going to lose everything, he might as well as hold on to the last thing he had. Dean felt the heat, the light. He wrapped his hands around Cas's back, holding him tightly as to not let go. Dean felt Castiel loosen in his grip, but he still didn't let go. Cas's held fell to his shoulder, and Dean felt a tear roll down his cheek as he looked up at the light that was too bright to see past. The pain started to fade, and the light took them away.
It wasn't like waking up, not exactly. Dean felt a tug at the edge of his mind, so gentle he thought he might have imagined it. Slowly, he opened his eyes. It was bright still, but it didn't hurt. It was perfect. Like a warm summer day, not too hot. The sky above him was a blue. He remembered that sky. One day, Sam and he had snuck away to a beach to swim. The water had been so blue, the same color of Cas's eyes, only brighter, like an increased intensity. The air smelled like a forest, or flowers, with mini doughnuts mixed in the breeze, and clear ocean smells. He wasn't hurting anymore.
Dean sat up, looking around. He suddenly was embraced by two people. Red hair blocked his view, but when they stepped back, Dean smiled at Charlie and Kevin. They were both beaming. Kevin was wearing graduation robes, and Charlie was wearing a Doctor Who t-shirt. Her mother and father stood a bit back, with Kevin's father.
"You made it!" Charlie laughed. Dean was attack hugged by Jo. He laughed as he tackled him to the ground again. Ellen watched them, a smirk growing on her face. Pam and Ash were there, and a familiar face that Dean thought he would never see again.
"Meg?" He asked.
"It turns out that even demons can get happy endings." She said.
"Dean, we have to show you something." Jess said, grabbing his hand and helping him up. Dean stared at her. She looked older now, her curls were shorter. She was wearing a black shirt and a coat, which was odd to Dean for some reason. Adam was there, giving Dean a half smile. He was the first of two lines, leading up a hill. The grass was so green, it shocked Dean's eyes, in a good way. He ran from person to person, hugging them and saying hello. Dean turned to see the end of the line. Bobby, Cas, and Mary stood there, side by side.
"The white trenchcoat suits you." Dean said to Cas, laughing.
"What did I say, Mary? I said these idjits were finally going to end up together."
"I know." Mary sighed. "I never said that they weren't."
Dean put his hands around the back of Cas's head, running his fingers through Cas's hair, and then pulled him in for another kiss.
"I knew it." Dean whispered. "You did love me."
"Dean… I always love you."
The lines had become a group. They were clapping, smiling. No one was hurting or dying anymore. No one would be hurt again. This was the story of Dean and Sam Winchester. And this is how it ends.
