Disclaimer: Horses of the Dawn/ Wolves of the Beyond do NOT belong to me, however much I wish I had written them.
This is technically a crossover between Wolves of the Beyond and Horses of the Dawn, but since they both are in the same world, both were written by the same author, and the pack and herd may have met in the last Wolves of the Beyond book..
Prologue
Estrella awoke, a misty drizzle sprinkling her muzzle. She yawned and stretched, shaking herself to rid her light colored coat of the moisture it had accumulated overnight. She breathed in the fresh air happily, eyes traveling over the lush green fields of grass before was a hint of the salty scent of the nearby ocean, it's scent bringing back memories of her dam and the boat she had spent her first few weeks of life on.
The horses had been thrown overboard by the Seeker in hopes of lightening the load, and they had miraculously swum to safety. Well, most of them. Perlina, Estrella's dam, had been killed by a shark only moments after being thrown off the ship. It was in her final moments that Estrella caught a glimpse of the tiny horse and a faint smell of the sweet grass that now surrounded her in her dam's eye. How long ago that had been!
The surviving hoses had then traveled through the vast jungles, deserts, plains, and mountains of the new land, finally making their way to the sweet grass, the land of the First Horse. Along the way they had freed almost a hundred more horses donkeys and mules, all of them now slowly learning how to be wild. Estrella's gaze rested on the original horses in the First Herd. Sky, Corazon, Bobcat, and many others had formed a tight bond during their travels. Especially her and Hold On, the stallion that had become her best friend. The old horse was blind now, the result of a terrible fire, but was just as capable as the others, and perhaps more so. While he had been separated from the herd, a human boy had found him and become his eyes. Tijo had become part of the herd, able to understand the horse's speech easily. He was a great friend to all of them, and a great help when his clever hands were needed to assist an ailing horse.
Estrella closed her eyes, enjoying the light drizzle that cooled her skin and made her feel refreshed. This is what home feels like, she thought, relishing in the peace of the moment.
It didn't last long.
"Estrella!" It was Sky, and there was distress in his voice.
