A Part of His Past

"Where is it?" Hershel mumbled while searching his desk. "I thought I had brought it with me downstairs?"

"What are you searching for?" Emmy wanted to know.

"The folder of this Egyptian vase they found last week. It could be upstairs…"

"I'll get it for you," she offered at once.

"No, don't do my work, dear," he stopped her.

But she just went to him, gave him a kiss and replied: "But I love to," and left quickly the room.

They had been together now for almost half a year. Emmy had come back from her journey through Ireland and soon one thing had led to the another and they soon had confessed each other their love. She had moved in with him into his house and it was beautiful with sometimes a bit of chaos, especially in his two studies (one downstairs and one upstairs). She was heading now from the first to the latter, hoping that she would find the folder…

When she entered the room her hopes didn't grow – it was such a mess. How can he even work in here? she thought but then remembered that he barely used this room anymore because her room was downstairs as well and he wanted to be near her. And therefore she was also very rarely in this room. She went to his desk and started searching for the folder when her gaze stopped on a pictures. A photo in a beautiful frame was arranged on the desk, so that Hershel could see it when he sat at his desk.

Emmy took the old photography in her hands and only stared at it, for it showed… Claire.

And in that position Hershel found her three minutes later. "Emmy?" he called from the corridor. "Emmy? I found it. I knew I took it with me downstairs." Then he walked into his study and stopped abruptly. Slowly he walked towards her. "Emmy?" he said cautiously.

She only looked at him.

"I am sorry," he said at once and took the photo out of her hands. "I should have put it away a long time ago…"

But to his surprise Emmy shook her head. "No," she said firmly although she needed to swallow. "No. She is a part of your past." She looked him in the eyes to prove that she meant what she was saying. "You loved her very deeply and only cruel fate took her away from you. I don't want you to forget her."

"But now I have you," he said and took her in his arms. "And I love you. Very much."

"I know," she smiled. "And that's why it's okay."

He nodded but still put the photo in one of the drawers of his desk.

"But," Emmy tried to protest but was interrupted at once.

"No," he said. "I want it like this. Yes, she is a part of my past – but you are my present and hopefully my future as well, and I want to concentrate on you, and you only." He gave her a gentle kiss.

"Thank you," she answered trying not to cry out of happiness.

"Thank you, my dear," he replied and embraced her closely.

THE END.
