Fractured Sky

"So? What do you think"
He cracked open one eye to look at the proffered beyblade. After scanning it quickly, he closed his eyes again. "Better endurance"
"Yeah. Chief wanted to go for speed, but I found this wicked base in Max's pile of stuff and asked if I could try it out"
There was a pause and a rustling, cracking movement against the bark of the tree. "So? Do you want to come down and try it out with me"
He sighed and thought it over for a moment. "Nah. Not right now. Practice by yourself"
There was an answering sigh and more rustling against leaves before the soft whurr of a beyblade hummed into their ears.
"Meditate," came the higher voice. "Quiet your mind and feel the blade as a part of yourself. Fix each flaw, see how long you can keep spinning"
There was no answer, but the whurr quieted. They were silent for a long time, hypnotized by the sounds around them and the thoughts within.
And of course it was he who broke the silence first.
"So...why are you being so quiet today"
Not many people would have noticed a change from the normal.
Then again, there weren't many people worth talking to either; even less those he trusted to talk to like the one he was with now.
"Today is the anniversary of that day on the lake"
It sounded like an innocent comment. It could be taken many ways. But for them, there was only one lake worth remembering.
"Oh...yeah... sorry, I forgot"
He took another deep breath, feeling the almost maternal empathy filling him the way it sometimes did when it came to his teammate-friends. "It's not a really big deal. I just don't want to blade against you today"
He almost saw the nod that the other would make below him with his eyes closed. "I understand"
There was another long pause.
The rustling on the ground increased and the tree shook for a few moments, making Kai crack open his eyes once again. There was someone sitting on a branch just above him. He let a mild glare prove his dislike at being upped, but decided he was also too lazy to move. The whurr of the beyblade below continued. "I'm glad you came back with us, you know"
He knew. It felt good to hear anyways, which didn't make sense.
"I know. Thank you... for everything"
He felt a heavy hand on his shoulder and opened his eyes to look at it's owner. He smiled back at the look in those eyes, a small smile, but a heartfelt one.
And then the other tipped, tumbled, grabbed hold of his shirt and he tried to catch his arm, but only managed to pull himself off the branch and they hit the ground (but thankfully no branches) with a loud thump that left him breathless and with an aching head.
"Shit," he groaned once he felt he could speak. "You idiot..."
All he got was laughter in return as a beyblade spun to a halt in the loam.
"Well, that didn't work too well."
They lay their for a while, spread-eagle on the dirt, hands just touching, staring up at the fractured sky between branches.
Yes, I know the fifth-last paragraph is sort of run-on-y, it was intentional, I assure you.
