1. The Encounter With Tom Bombadil
- Frodo Baggins, heir of Bilbo Baggins
Long ago, Bilbo Baggins obtained the Ruling Ring of Middle Earth. This ring was not ordinary. It was once worn by Sauron the Maia, before Isildur, son of Elendil, cut it from his hand. Elrond the Halfelven advised the destruction of it at once, but Isildur did not heed the Elf's advice. Isildur was slain, the ring lost for centuries. It was then found by a hobbit-like creature known as Sméagol, or to most Gollum. The ring ensnared him and took control of his mind for centuries until the ring slipped into the hands of a lost hobbit named Bilbo Baggins. It was he who discovered the coveted power of the ring, to make its bearer invisible. The ring passed on to Frodo Baggins, who was burdened with the task to destroy this ring before Sauron returned. At the beginning of this adventure, he encountered Tom Bombadil, an inhabitant of the Old Forest.
Bombadil saved him from Huorns, terrible and angry trees. Frodo Baggins and his three Hobbit friends from the Shire stayed with Tom Bombadil. One night, Frodo could not sleep. The Ring kept him awake with its burden hurting him. Every beat of his heart was torture. So he scurried towards the kitchen, but was stopped by voices from within.
"Goldberry, they have the ring, the one ring. It is too dangerous for them to be here! Do you not know of the dangers of these woods, especially at night!"
"Yes, Tom. You must help protect them. I have spoken to the Entwives--"
"The Entwives, they are to protect us?"
"Yes, they are forming a large protection, never underestimate them"
"I must contact Elrond for protection--"
"How are you to ride to Rivendell in one night? Sound the Horn. He will know of our plight and send the Elves on lookout"
"Oh, Goldberry, thank you. I will do just that in the morning"
"Frodo you may come in" said Goldberry
The hobbit could have sworn he could not have been heard about at these hours. Elves, he thought.
He opened the door and Goldberry's face was lit up with a golden smile. She touched his chain, which held the Ring. The chain glimmered and felt warm, the burden less heavy. She kissed his cheek.
"Sleep now, Hobbit"
