Chapter 1
New York 1964
A woman in dark pants and shirt was crouched down in an alleyway. Her brown hair was tied back as an olive skin man came behind her and said, "What's the situation, Jones?"
The woman scowled and said, "Man's in the warehouse. Still waiting for back up."
"What's the plan?"
"Simple. We go after him, Joe."
Joe smiled at his protégé, "What about backup?"
"We don't need it," as she patted her side, "I have backup."
"Jones," as she walked into the warehouse, carefully moving in the dark. She heard a sound and whipped around. A man came from behind and she executed a drop put move, kneeing him in the groin. The man howled as she grabbed his hands and cuffed him, "You're under arrest."
The backup arrived as the Lieutenant looked at her and said, "Officer Jones. Getting into trouble, again?"
"Not at all," smiling, "He's all yours."
Joe chuckled as he put an arm around her shoulders, "Good job, Lauren."
"Thanks," as she shrugged it off and followed in the waiting squad car.
A few hours later, Lauren arrived at her modest apartment above the After Dark nightclub that she was part owner. She locked her piece up and went to the fridge for a cold beer as her little sister, Isabelle, came in from her room, "What time is it?"
"Late," as Lauren looked in the fridge for something to eat, "How was it tonight?"
"We rocked, as usual," smiling, "You?"
"One criminal off the street," as she drank the beer.
Isabelle shook her head; "Maman and Dad are still having a field day you decided to be a cop."
Lauren smiled, "All that wasted education," micking her mother.
"Dad's worse, you know."
"Match point," as she dumped the rest of the beer, "I'm heading for bed."
"Dad wanted to meet with you for lunch, remember?"
Lauren groaned, "I keep forgetting."
"I'm not covering for you, Laurie."
"Yeah, I know," as she smiled at Isabelle, "Good night."
