Chapter 2
His eye darted around the peep hole searching for her. Finding her sitting on the ground she sobbed quietly. He thought of what to do. He wanted to help the women but didn't want to let in any unwanted guest. Besides, he was safe from any harm. Why risk the chance of letting infection into his new fortress of solitude? Moving away quietly he shook his head. He sat quietly on the bed making sure to keep his presence unknown. He thought for a moment longer before ignoring his instincts. He bolted to the door unlocking it and opening it. She was sleeping. Her breast bounced lightly confirming his suspicions. She had a baby.
"Hey, wake up. Please come inside." She groaned slightly and moved her head. He looked both ways making sure it was clear before helping her. He kneeled down next to her and shook her slightly. Her eyes shot open and he placed his hand over her mouth expecting a scream. Their eyes locked and she seemed to calm almost instantly.
"I want to help you, please, come inside." She nodded her head slowly, astounded at the man saving her life. They raced inside and he locked the door checking it twice.
"Thank you so much," She began.
"Please, keep your voice down. Do not make me regret bringing you in here." There was a sudden heavy air between them. She again nodded her head and bounced the baby lightly.
"Do you have food?" She whispered. He shook his head.
"I've only been in here a few hours." He replied. He ushered her to the bed and she sat down exhausted.
"How long have you been on the street?" She lowered her head.
"Four days." She answered quietly. They sat whispering to each other. He learned her name was Jenna and her baby boy's name was Marcus after his father. She explained her husbands had died saving them both. He sacrificed himself to draw attention so they could slip away unnoticed.
"So, what is your name?" She asked politely. He shook his head.
"I don't know." He said simply.
"Well everyone has a name."
"They call me Doc," He said. He told her all that had happened including the dream he had and what he had remembered. She didn't know what to say at first. She told him that maybe he had amnesia and the dream could have been a recent memory. He told her that she could have the bed and he would stay up and keep watch. She told him that they could take shifts and she would keep watch in the morning.
"What about food?" He said looking out the window.
"I think you should focus on yourself. My baby and I will be ok, honest." She said.
"I don't want to leave and risk bringing the infection to us."
"It's already too late for that." He turned to her not understanding. She pulled the baby off of her breast and realized her right breast was gone. The baby was a zombie chewing away at her. The baby began crying a mind numbing scream. She shoved her exposed flesh into the baby's mouth. Immediately he quieted down. Horror gripped him but was careful not to show it.
"How long have you been infected?" He asked feeling his nerves begin to rattle. She didn't answer.
"You have to leave." He said walking to the door. Turning to her she had become unconscious. He drew his gun and pointed it at her. He cursed himself for being soft hearted. Now he would have to kill her. She would have to die as well as the child. She would soon become a monstrous being with its sole purpose is to eat human flesh. He dreaded the thought of killing the women. She was gorgeous and had high cheek bones. He admired her beauty and thought he would've asked her out on a date if she would give him the opportunity. It had been well over a minute since she had passed out unconscious. He shook his head and couldn't bring himself to do it. His hands trembled and his nerves took over. He looked around grabbing random pieces of clothing and opening the door to the room. The baby began its skin crawling yell. He immediately turned to see the women pale and standing as if she was leaning on an invisible wall. He looked at the baby now lying on its stomach whaling away. He glanced at her as her mouth opened preparing for her scream as the undead do in search for food. The women let out a heart stopping hiss. He slammed the door shut as she cried and bolted towards him. His heart raced faster than any race horse. The zombified women pounded at the door as her baby cried for food. The night was dark and he didn't know what to do, but he sprinted towards the way he had come. Stepping over the body mangled body he opened the door cautiously. Looking around the street was quiet. In the distance he saw a figure swaying back and forth with its arms flowing carelessly from side to side. No doubt the woman pounding was beginning to draw attention. Ignoring that direction with the SUV he moved forward through the night. Creeping against any and all walls he found himself on a rooftop. He tried to check the building but all doors and exits were sealed shut. Climbing a fire ladder he searched the roof. Finding it empty he pulled up the ladder to stop anyone or anything from following him. Peeking over all the ledges he was safe for the time being. He sat in the corner resting his head on his knees.
"I'm starving." He said breathing deeply. He yawned and thought how easily he fell for the women's deceit. He shook off the gruesome face she had when she attacked him. He thought long and hard about the dream he had, but couldn't make much sense of it.
"Tomorrow is another day." He thought before fading away into slumber not even an explosion could wake him.
