What If
By Mint Pizza Queen

If the true meaning to existence was living happy, Roy would've been long dead.

He's glad that it wasn't the reason for his existence; he would never have met and fallen for a certain blonde subordinate whose patience matched his height.

However, Roy often thinks about the 'what ifs' and usually, much to his regret, upsets himself so much that he wakes up the next morning and realizes that he had got himself into another drunken stupor just to forget everything and relieve the pain.

He just can't help by think though.

What if he had never met Edward? What if he hadn't let Edward become a State Alchemist? What if he didn't let Ed go unescorted on his missions? What if he actually helped Ed obtain the stone and hadn't hid the military's secrets? What if he had been there in Lab 5 when the homunculus attacked? What if he hadn't let Ed run away—?

Away. Gone. Just like Edward.

What if he hadn't let Edward walk out that door? Would he still be here, with Roy? Would he be in the military still?

Would he still be alive?

Roy shudders as his thoughts run away from his rationality and he quickly gulps the last of his drink. He looks across the room, onto the table where his caliber laid, loaded and ready to be fired.

He risks a look back to the newspaper clippings all detailing about Edward and his famous successions and achievements in helping the common man. The other headlines detail about the search for the missing alchemist. Nausea fills his gut and he looks away, back to the gun.

Too many questions. Too few answers. One question nagged at him like a leech—

What if he came back?

'The dead don't come back to life,' he reminded himself. 'But that's never stopped Ed before.'

He refills his glass and turns his back to the gun. This was one answer he was willing to wait for.
