"Link – I'm sorry." The golden haired reincarnation of the goddess murmured. Her sapphire eyes glistened with unshed tears as she stared at the emerald-clad hero with regret.
"ZELDA!" Link bellowed when he comprehended what she was about to do. He sprinted towards her towards her to save her from an inevitable fate. He had almost reached her when a great crystal surrounded her and she slipped into the slumber of a millennium. He started to pound on it, trying to release the girl that he had sacrificed so much to be with. His sapphire eyes filled with tears. He started to rock back and forth like a child, his sobs shaking his body. Hearing his agony, I cautiously arose from my blade.
"Master - " I started to say, but Link gave no response. My eyebrows furrowed as a new sensation engulfed me. This was the same boy who had faced countless trials against monsters who would have stopped at nothing to kill him. He gained wounds that would never fully heal – burns from Scaldera, stings from Moldarach, electric pulses from the Imprisoned, and bloody cut from Ghirahim – but I had never seen him cry. His sapphire eyes would simple flash with growing determination and he would endure in silence. Such was his destiny But at this moment, his tear never seemed to end.
"Fi." He suddenly said. He raised his tearstained face.
"Yes, Master?"
"What was the point?"
"What do you mean?"
"What was the damn point of me coming her?!" He yelled, slamming his fists into the ground. "All this time I thought that if I could only get to Zelda, I could save her. But now she put herself in an eternal sleep!"
"It is your duty." I said simply.
"My duty?"
"You're not an ordinary boy, Link." I stated, meeting his gaze.
"Yes I am! I haven't ever done anything worth remembering."
"Of course you have. Master, as each day passes, you become a little more heroic. You may think that you are normal but you are called to a higher plane that most of humanity. You will never be forgotten."
"But what if I fail?" He voiced his deepest, darkest fear with earnest eyes. "What if I'm not what you think I am?"
"You are." I replied seriously. "Believe in yourself, Master."
"Why do you always call me that?"
"You are my master. My sole purpose of existing is to serve you."
"Call me Link."
"But Master, I - "
"Please." The protestations died on my lips as I gazed at his broken expression.
"Yes, Link."
"Fi? Are we friends?" Link asked tentatively. I paused to consider the question.
"Yes." He gave me a blinding smile, his eyes lighting up with joy. The emotions prompted him to suddenly hug me. He twirled me around and set me down as if I had been as light as a feather. New heat that I had never experienced before pooled into my cheeks as I was embraced.
"Thanks Fi," He said gratefully as he pulled away. "You are just as heroic as I am."
"Eh?"
"Every day you are the one who faces the monsters with me." He gently laid his hand on my cheek. I opened my mouth to reply, but I was suddenly lost for words. He eagerly clenched his fist. "Let's go save Zelda."
"Yes, Master!" I said gladly, floating back into the hilt that was strapped across his back. Link . . . he possessed incredible strength both emotionally and physically. With his determination, we would definitely be able to save his goddess.
You know, I feel really bad for poor Link in Skyward Sword. It's obvious that he really cares for Zelda, but she is always holding him at arm's length. There is great potential between Fi and Link though. After all, she "is the one who faces the monsters with [him]."
