A/N: Yes, I am back another try at HikaKao. Why? Because this idea, hit me, and I wanted to try it out. No matter the length, nor the fact that this kind of one sided, unrequited love from Kaoru to Hikaru has been sorely overdone.
Disclaimer: I don't own. Unbeta'd!
Only By Moonlight:
The moon hung high in the night sky, perched behind wisps of clouds. It shone luminescent, and left small rays to crawl through the curtains. I lay in our bed. The one we had shared since our younger years, as we could find no sense in being apart. Ever. Silent, warm breath escaped from Hikaru's lips and hit my neck, causing a chill to sweep over my senses. Moonlight shone soft on his face, as I looked on in amazement. Only by moonlight could I see Hikaru like this. Only when the sun set, and the moon rose could I marvel at his beauty. Only when the stars shone brightly could I see how ungodly gorgeous he was. Completely the same, and terribly different from my own person. Suddenly I was aware of every smooth plane of his body. He could only be mine by the light of the moon.
I fell asleep like this every night. Lulled by the steady breathing of my brother, until I myself could drift. When morning would come, Hikaru and I would be siblings and nothing more, though we played a game all too similar to my true desires. The day would bring the sun, and all fair judgment to light.
This is wrong.

I woke the next morning, blinking the sleep from my eyes. I rolled over to the shadows of the room, only to see Hikaru smiling warmly at me. But alas, school was waiting. So we quickly dressed and prepared for the day ahead.
It was nothing different. A fleeting touch here, his warm whispers in my ear, the throaty chuckle reserved for me at these times only, and the incessant gushing from the females around us, no doubt enjoying what hurt me so deep inside. True conversation seeped in through our 'acting', and I snuck a few glances at my brother, each flick of the eyes driving me further and further over the edge.
I need you.

That evening, I plopped onto our bed next to an extremely exhausted Hikaru. "G'night Kaoru. I love you." he murmurs before silently closing his eyes.
If only he meant those words the way I've always hoped he would. "I love you too Hikaru." I whisper back, finding his hand and giving it a squeeze. The corners of his lips curve into a small smile, and sleep takes him.
The moon was perched high in the sky, hidden behind giant sleepless clouds on a black, starless night. I lay awake, staring into the darkness of our large room, for no moonlight escaped from behind the giant clouds to shine soft upon his face.
Needless to say, it was a lonely night.
