Unexpected Camaraderie

Daphne sighed as she focused on her lines. The last thing she wanted to do on a Saturday was be in detention, but she knew it could be worse. She could have gotten stuck with Filch. All in all, McGonagall was one of the better professors to have detention with.

She looked over at her companions.

Boot was ferociously writing. No surprise there. Out of all of the Ravenclaws, she always deemed Boots to be Professor's Pet.

Meanwhile, Abbott had her head on her desk. She wasn't even pretending to write lines. It was stupidly brave, especially for a Hufflepuff. It was true that McGonagall wasn't in the room, but Daphne was sure she'd check their work, and if she didn't think they had enough lines written, there would be another detention in their futures.

It wasn't any of her business If Abbott lost another Saturday, but she couldn't stop herself from speaking up. "Abbott, You should write."

Abbott didn't raise her head from where it was pillowed on her arms. "Leave me alone, Greengrass."

Daphne shrugged. "It will be your Saturday ruined."

Boot managed to tear himself away from his parchment. "Leave her alone. Can't you see she's hurting? Or are you too much of an ice princess to notice?"

Daphne flinched at the moniker she was so used to.

"That wasn't nice," Abbott defended, lifting her head up from its position.

"I was helping you." Boot argued.

"I didn't ask you to help me."

Daphne's eyebrows rose. "Why are you hurting?"

Abbott laid her head down again. "You'll think it's stupid."

"Maybe, maybe not."

Abbott sighed. "I asked Justin to be my date to Hogsmeade and he said no."

Daphne tilted her head. "What's the big deal? You're not the first girl to be turned down for a date."

Abbott blushed. "He said it was because I was too big for him."

Daphne had to think about it, and then she understood it. Too big, too fat. She shook her head. "What a jerk."

"Yeah," Abbott agreed, "And I thought he was so nice."

"Finch-Fletchley doesn't know how lucky he was," Boot said.

Daphne easily saw his infatuation with the Hufflepuff. Despite herself, she found herself nodding. "You're a pretty, smart, loyal, independent woman. You shouldn't let any boy make you doubt that."

"I know, but I like him."

"It's his loss," Boot said.

"Don't give the creep a moment of your time; he's not worth it."

"I Just… I feel unhappy."

Daphne rolled her eyes. "You feel unhappy now, but it won't last forever."

Abbott nodded. "I guess."

"But if you get another Saturday detention, you'll be unhappy for even longer," Daphne advised.

Abbott shot Daphne a look, but she picked up her quill, dipped the point into a bottle of ink, and began writing her and Daphne followed suit.
