A/N: I heard this song on my sister's old iPod, and instantly thought of Phantom in Phantom Of Manhattan and his relationship with Christine and Gustave. I know most people didn't like it, but, as an avid fanfiction reader and writer, I read it as a work based on another. I found it at my local library, read it (or am reading it). Hope you like this. The song is Back To A Reason Part II by Trans-Siberian Orchestra.

Phantom stood on the rooftop, looking down. Yesterday, Christine had said no. He would not see his son. He ached to know the boy, to know he had created something beautiful. He needed companionship. Darius was sufficient, but he was crazed and cared only for Mammon, that damned God of Gold. Yes, Gold was precious, but Darius had known only greed, never love.

Time

Standing all alone

I bled for you

I wanted to

Each drop my own

Slowly they depart

But fall in vain

Like desert rain

And still they fall on and on and on

He had simply given up, until Madame Giry had sent him that letter. Christine was his only reason for living, and then she was gone. Now he had a son…? Erik raised his head to the sky and felt the rushing winds of the coming storm.

Got to get back to a reason

Got to get back to a reason i once knew

And this late in the seasons

One by one distractions fade from view

So

Drifting through the dark

The sympathy

Of night's mercy

Inside my heart

Is your life the same?

Do ghosts cry tears?

Do they feel years?

As time just goes on and on and on

Was it only thirteen years ago? When he was a passionate, loving, composer of miraculous melodies? Those days seemed an eternity away. The petals of the rose had long ago lost their color and their message. The mask he once wore was no longer sufficient. He no longer cried, but the sadness and the anger still boiled in his blood. He wanted to shake the woman by the shoulders, tell her that he always thought only of her, that Raoul could never love her as he did. He wanted to kiss her and love her and share his great wealth with the woman of his dreams and his child.

Got to get back to a reason

Got to get back to a reason I once knew

And this late in the seasons

One by one distractions fade from view

I'm looking for you

I'm looking for I don't know what

I can't see there anymore

And all my time's been taken

Is this what it seems?

The lure of a dream

And I'm afraid to walk back through that door

To find that I've awakened

He was frightened. Of her, no. Of those eyes, of the smile, of her tears. Each tear was a knife in his tender soul. He wished that he could go back to Paris, to those days when Christine loved him. He should have said he loved her. He should have never killed Buquet. He should have told her that he was not her father, but he loved her, and would give anything to know how she felt.

The night seems to care

The dreams in the air

The snow's coming down

It beckons me dare

It whispers, it hopes

It holds and confides

And offers a bridge

Across these divides

The parts of my life

I've tried to forget

It's gathered each piece

And carefully kept

Somewhere in the dark

Beyond all the cold

There is a child

That's part of my soul

That's part of my soul

The child was part of him. He wanted to embrace the child, to hear the boy say he loved him, to watch him grow. He wanted to guide the boy, to show him the wonders of this fantastic world. He desired to teach him all that he knew.

Got to get back to a reason

Got to get back to a reason I once knew

And this late in the seasons

One by one distractions fade from view

The only reason I have left is

You
