A/N: I'm trying to get some stuff done before I disappear into the hell of exams. Heh… anyway, Prompt 61: Winter. Cute EstFin.
Winter love
It became apparent to the young man, pacing back and forth in front of the window, that it was snowing. He paused, navy eyes fixed momentarily on the fat flakes of frozen water drifting steadily down. The first snows of winter, in early November. Well, that seemed about right. Leaving the work that he had been thinking about on his desk, he sat at the window seat, just watching silently. No matter how many times he saw it, the wintery weather would always remind him of the kind-hearted Finn. Running a pale hand through his white-blond hair, the Estonian sighed. It had been far too long since he had seen Finland. Not since… he could again and that made him frown. Twenty one years since he had properly seen the man whom he had spent nearly all of his childhood with. He knew it was just that putting an economy back on its feet after seventy years of a totalitarian communist dictatorship was taxing work, long and arduous. He stood; eyes still fixed on the snow and placed a hand in his pocket, getting out his mobile phone. Without a second thought, Estonia punched in the number and raised the phone to his ear. The dialling tone sounded three times before a cheery voice answered,
"Moi!"
"Tere, Soome." Estonia winced as his voice shook. He'd been rid of his stammer for years now, but still, he was not comfortable talking.
"Viro! It has been so long since we have talked. Is there something wrong?"
"It's snowing." Estonia sighed softly and relaxed at the soft chuckle that sounded down the phone.
"On the 3rd of November? I thought you were a Northern nation." The teasing tone of the Finn's voice caused the Estonian to pout.
"It's the first snow! You hush, just because you've got snow on the 13th of August, doesn't mean we're all freezing like you." Finland knew Estonia was teasing. It was odd, how easy it was to slip back into this, the friendly jibs and teasing comments after so many years apart.
"Well, I'm sorry for being constantly so cold!" They both laughed then, softly as though someone else was listening.
"Viro?"
"Mm, jah?"
"Where have you been? I mean, I've seen you at meetings and the like but…"
"I know, I'm sorry. It's been hard, putting things back together. To return to having a government and elections and… Jah. It's not been easy."
"You should have called earlier," scolded the Finn. "You sound exhausted."
"I am," admitted the Estonian, sighing heavily.
"Come over. It's been too long since we've spoken properly."
"I… Okei."
And so, as the Estonian carefully packed some clothes for a few days at his friends, he smiled, eyes on the snow. The silence in his house no longer felt stifling, more calmly waiting as the snow began to pile up in the garden outside, not marked by anything. Turning out the light, Estonia left his home as the blanket of gentle snow settled, creating a fairy tale out of a cold winter's day.
