A/N: Yeah, when Jade says that by the time she knew she was pregnant Race was already in another relationship? She's lying. There is a different reason why she never told him.
Jade had to admit, she was glad Race wasn't like most of the guys she knew. Or rather, most of the guys she knew that could stand to be in the same room as her. Race liked to do more than just 'bedroom activities' with her. He liked spending time with her. Even if it was simply sitting with her while she was feeling sick.
At the moment Jade was laying on her side holding her stomach, while her head was resting on Race's lap. He was stroking her hair, something that felt good though it couldn't quite distract her from the feeling of her stomach trying to turn itself inside out. Though she'd long since learned to do away with the emotion, she couldn't help but feel a little guilty. She wasn't feeling sick because of a stomach bug - like she had led Race to believe - no, she was feeling unwell because of something far more life changing.
She still couldn't believe the result of the test. She had never, in a million years, pictured herself as a mother. She still couldn't picture it. Though, she could easily picture Race as a father. Perhaps she should tell him after all, didn't he deserve to know he was going to be a father?
No. She couldn't. She knew how he'd react to that. She knew he'd stick around. As much as she loved Race, she knew it wouldn't end well for them if they were ever tied down together by something. The child would bind them, take away their freedom. Jade didn't want that. She needed her freedom.
She could, in theory, just leave Race and the baby once it was born... but that would mean having to keep her distance from Race and she didn't want that either. No, keeping it a secret and dealing with the child on her own was the best course of action.
How would she deal with the child? No. It was best not to think about that right now.
"Race?" She mumbled.
"Hmm?" Race's hand stilled, resting on top of her head.
"I'm cold." That was of course code for something else, it was code for "I want to cuddle".
Race kicked off his boots as Jade lifted her head so he could get up. He lay down beside her - keeping her between him and the edge of the bed - and wrapped his arms around her. Jade huddled closer to him, wishing they could do this every night.
They couldn't of course. Race was rarely in Hong Kong. In fact, he'd be gone by morning, having to return to America before he got into too much trouble. But for tonight however, he would stay with her.
And she would continue to reassure herself that she was making the right choice.
