"Brother..." he heard the girl crying out in his dreams. Sweet little Lenalee...his baby sister. Always in his dreams, always ripped apart by swarms of Akuma so that late at night in his room he'd be forced to sit up, sweating profusely and hoping she was safe. It had been...years...since he had joined the order. She had gotten so mad when he tried to stop her, to keep her off the dangerous missions.
"Komui...I'm an exorcist...this is what I do." She protested once, putting on her boots.
"But...if anything happens..."
"I'll always come back brother." She wrapped her arms around him, "I'd never leave these poor people alone with you." She had teased, putting a smile on her brother's face.
This was all wrong. The chief muttered to himself in his room. Lenalee was...a child still. She shouldn't have to risk her life everyday, none of them should. Take a look at Allen...he's 15. 15 and cursed by demons. The kids will never truly know peace. Look at Kanda, his anger is directed at everyone, why? Who knows what the 18 year old samurai may have lost? What had all of them lost?
"Damn you, Earl." Komui swore, "Damn you and your Akuma."
"Brother?" a gentle knock on the door heralded Lenalee's voice as it penetrated the darkness of the Chief's room.
"Yeah?"
"I had a nightmare again."
"Come on in." He said, the girl walked into the room. She looked so small and frail in the black night-gown she wore, on her legs were the Dark Steel Boots, a 'just in case' precaution all exorcists took. She walked over to the bedside, silhouetted against the faint light behind her.
"What about this time Lenalee?" asked Komui, putting on his glasses and pulling her on the bed into a hug.
"Allen...Lavi...Kanda...You...everyone was dead. The Earl came before me, made me the standard offer...I..." she put her face in her hands and shook her head, as if trying to combat the horror of her mind, she was shaking. "I knew what would happen...but I took him up on the offer." the girl clung to her brother. "Komui, I made you four into Akuma...I..."
"Ssh." he said softly, putting a hand on the back of her head and hugging her close. "It was just a dream Lenalee. We both know you'd never do that. Besides," He smiled at her and kissed his sister on the forehead. He would never forgive the Earl for making her go through this, "I've had that nightmare many times myself. I think everyone has."
"Even Kanda?"
"Particularlly Kanda. Why else do you think he's such a grump?" Lenalee giggled a little and gave her older brother a big hug.
"Thanks Komui."
