AN: Belated birthday fanfic for Ileana-dear since I totally forgot to get her a present (SORRY, SORRY I'M SOOOOOOOO SOOOORRRYYYY!). It's just a little Matt/Mello drabble as a spur of the moment thing. I do hope you enjoy Ileana-dear.
Warning: Spoilers for chapter 99 of the Death Note manga and episode 35 of the anime. Also, small hints of Matt/Mello which means boyxboy love. If you a) do not want to be spoiled for the Death Note anime/manga or b) don't like boyxboy pairings, please press the back button NOW.
Matt wasn't afraid of dying.
As the third successor in L's name, he had been raised and taught to think of death as something inevitable, an event that would occur eventually. He was taught not to fear it, but to think beyond it. He was taught to think objectively, to consider himself as only part of another larger story so that he could always be ready with a back-up plan in case he did die.
Matt, having always been the only one out of L's three successors with a devil-may-care attitude, followed these teachings only because he had nothing else.
Until he became friends with Mello, until he left Whammy's house for Mello. And it was only when he had fallen so deeply and hopelessly in love with Mello that he had abandoned his teachings like the Game and Watch console system, did he realize how much he had given up.
But for Matt, what he had given up could never equal what he had been left with: Mello. Mello was all Matt needed and he would--and already had--follow the scarred, blonde man to his death.
Matt wasn't afraid of dying. Even the idea of hundreds of rapid-lightning bullets piercing his flesh from all sides, even the idea of being gunned down and dying and never being able to see Mello again didn't phase him. Because he had followed Mello to the very end of his life, and that was all that mattered to Matt.
He just hoped they had video games in the afterlife.
AN: Once again, happy belated birthday Ileana!
