Summary: What is left for a man when he loses everything?
Broken
Supervisory Special Agent David Rossi stood stock still hearing the words but not understanding them. He shook his head back and forth trying to stop the litany of words.
No, this couldn't be!
He had just spoken to her.
They were wrong!
They had to be!
WRONG…they were WRONG!
He knew they were. He had spoken to her less than two hours ago. She had teased him about how both his sons were running her ragged. She told him he owed her a trip to the spa to make up for Henry's unending energy and Thomas' continuous cravings for grapes and goldfish crackers. He had laughed and told her he would be more than happy to fund a spa day for her. He even tossed in Garcia and Emily into the pot to sweeten the deal.
Last night he had spoken to Henry. He had listened to his baby boy tell him about his trip to the museum. Heard all about the dinosaurs. How big they were…how tall they were. And how cool it would be if his Papa would build him one in the backyard. Dave had laughed at that, telling him a life size dinosaur might be a bit much but he would see what he could do about getting him a few smaller ones. His son's giggles and agreement filled him with warmth. Their nightly ritual of 'I love you forever … Ti amo per sempre' happened just as it always did.
Now they were saying…
No…he shook his head in denial again.
It wasn't true!
They were wrong!
They had to be! It was someone else. Someone else who had been hurt…killed. It had to be!
They had to be wrong!
They had to be!
Dave looked at the four people closest to him. The tears in their eyes and the devastation on their faces was unmistakable but still he shook his head in denial.
"No…No…no…no…," he whispered before he screamed it loud and long. The sound tore through the precinct stopping everyone in their tracks. Officers and secretaries…everyone turned to see what had made such an inhuman sound. It was a sound that no one that day would ever forget.
Aaron and Morgan grabbed him before he hit the ground. They gently lowered him the rest of the way. They held him tightly as he sobbed out his heartbreak.
The look they shared over his head spoke volumes. They had lost three members of their family today- JJ, Henry and Thomas- the newest unborn member. And while they would eventually recover they knew beyond a shadow of a doubt the man they held would never recover.
His heart was broken and they knew it was only a matter of time before his body was too.
