Martin was on the set of Sherlock. He was getting ready to run through a scene on his own. Benedict was running late, and they had to skip ahead to one of John's solo shots. Martin sat at a table getting in character, and waiting for the director to call action. He closes his eyes, thinking how his character John Watson would react to a cup of hot tea being spilled in his lap.
After several more moments of waiting for the 'Action', and never hearing it, he opened his eyes. Everyone's focus was turned away, no one was at the cameras, the boom mics were put down, everyone was looking at something over by the entrance. Martin quickly stood up from his chair and mad his way over to the crowd of people.
He tried to look over shoulders to see what all the commotion was. He shifted, moved, attempted to look past all the people, but he was much too short.
"Excuse me." Martin said finally, edging his way past person after person. After several curses and stepped toes later, he emerged though the crowd. He was met with Benedict.
Benedict had a bundle in his arms, a brown bag thrown over his right shoulder, a stain of spit up on his left, and bags under his eyes. Martin looked at Benedict in utter bewilderment. Had he really done what he was thinking?
Despite the exhausted look on Benedicts face, he smiled the most radiant of smiles when he saw Martin. Ben walked forward and showed martin the bundle. Wrapped up in the middle, was a small baby. The baby was staring up at Martin with brilliant blue eyes and a little smile.
"Say hello to Uncle Martin Stephanie." Benedict said, his voice croaking from a sleepless night. No doubt the baby had kept him awake. Stephanie's face lit up and she let out a little giggle. It was contagious. Benedict began to laugh, and so did everyone else. Despite his utter bewilderment, Martin began to laugh along with everyone.
Martin reached out to touch Stephanie's red hair. But to his surprise, Benedict places her entirely in his arms. Martin cradled her gently and rocked her back and forth slightly.
"What have you done Benedict?" Martin laughed jokingly.
"I have always wanted a family. Guess I couldn't wait. So I Adopted Stephanie. Isn't she beautiful?" Benedict leaned in and kissed her on the nose. She laughed again, and everyone smiled, and there were some 'Awe's' and 'Oh's'. Benedict reached forward and took Stephanie back.
"God it feels good to be a father." Benedict said. Hugging the baby. His baby. In his warm, fatherly, safe embrace.
