Requiem
Finished:5-10-09
The sky was dark. Thunder clasping, and lightning flashed. As if there were a storm outside. Despite those bad signs happened just beyond his window, he completely ignored them. His mind focused on a heap of—another people might call—junk. At least, until a screech pass through the madness, followed by a cry.
He freezed. Turned around to think, he heard another scream. This time it sounded like a name, but he couldn't make up in this distance. Was the Desians attacking? He stepped, looking at the window. It's terribly hard, almost impossible to see anything in that weather. Then again, being a dwarf his eyes were no better than anyone else to begin with. I'm too old to be involved in this war.
He had pulled himself out from the problems of the world for years. Although there was a village near, he know almost nothing about it except that they had a treaty with the Desians. Now that popped in mind, he brushed off the thought of Desians attacking. It's now or never. He assured himself.
He ran across the forest, only to find the most deprived scene. A young woman, torn and bloody, and a baby in her hand. From his observation, the kid only aged less of two. He ran faster. After all, one of their vows was to help anyone in need.
"I'm...Anna…" the woman answered weakly when he ask her name. She didn't really trust him, from her way to acts, somehow, protective when he touch her baby. She looked deeply into his eyes. Finally she lowered her guard.
"Please...take...care...of...Lloyd…"
Her embrace was released. He prayed silently.
Another life is gone from this land…
The baby cried. Maybe he has some sort of link between them, he whispered. Gently, he hugged the baby and brought him to the warmth of his small hut. He fell asleep soon, after spending times crying.
He checked the kid—now his—then grabbed the shovel resting against the wall. He dug a grave for the woman. For his honor toward Anna, he also made a tombstone for her. He honored her spirit and courage only to make sure her son will be saved.
The dawn was rising when he finally got the job done. He nodded before entered his hut. He understood, that night marked his new beginning. "I guess it's the time this old dwarf do something for this world again."

"See you later, dad."
"Don't forget to say it to your mother too."
The baby he found 16 years ago is no longer a baby. And he's quite proud of it. Even now, he never can forget that fateful night. Especially the smile engraved at the baby's little face. He murmured,
"Grow into a fine man, Lloyd."
