A/N: Matt just seems like the one to figure this out. /smiles/. By the way, I recommend searching 'Matt' and 'Geek In Pink' on youtube:)
Third the Nerd
Matt was sitting on his bed, staring up at the ceiling, mumbling along to 'The Geek In The Pink' that was playing on his mp3 player. His best friend and roommate was sprawled out on the floor, studying from three different books at once.
The blonde on the floor was always pouring every ounce of effort he had into his studies, just so he could be better than Near.
Near, who was always number one in line to succeed L. Mello was close behind, being number two, though he insisted this ranking would soon change. And Matt, well, he was third. Third the nerd.
"Whoa." Remember that saying that was always tossed around in elementary. Where all the numbers got associations?
Well Matt had suddenly remembered.
"Hey Mello," Matt said, smiling. His roommate looked up, annoyed.
"Can't you see I'm busy?"
Matt continued, ignoring his friends hint to shut up. "You know how they say 'third the nerd'? Well I was thinking, that's kind of true, cause I am a bit of a nerd." Mat sat up, still smiling.
Mello glared at his friend. "Right," he went back to his books, "Talk to me when you've got something important to say."
Matt sighed, then tried a different approach. "Ya know, you don't need to study so hard. You wanna know why?"
"Hm," Mello said, looking up at Matt so that he'd answer.
"Cause second's the best." Matt had a wicked grin on his face. "And firsts' the worst."
Mello just stared at his friend for a long time, long enough for Matt to wonder if he'd done something wrong. Finally, Mello spoke.
"Matt," he said, tone emotionless. "You do know that L can be considered first, right?"
Matt blinked… thought about it, then blinked again. "Oh. I guess he can be. But I'm talking successor wise." He smiled again.
"In that case…" Mello closed his books, got up, and looked at Matt with a smirk. "Lets' tell Near about your brilliant discovery."
The scary part was, Matt couldn't tell if that was sarcasm or not.
